Blackboard has several tools for assessment, including Tests, and Quizzes, Surveys, and
Assignments. These tools are used to carry out grading and learning assessment in the
space of the online course. In this video, you will see instructions about how to create
a Test tool in Blackboard. A tool for assessment is created inside of a Content Area. In your
Blackboard course you see a content area called "Assignments" in which tools for assessments
can be created, or you can create them in any other Content Area link. Select the Content
Area, and go to Assessment and click on "Tests". Select "Create" to create a new Test. Write
a name for the Test. There are two text areas, one where you can write a description of the
Test, and another where you can write instructions for the Test. Like using the text editor in
other places in Blackboard, you can include written text, video, multimedia, HTML content
or any other content from the web. In order to learn more about the text editor, see the
link "Blackboard Design". Click "Submit" when you have finished using the text editor. On
this page you can begin to create questions on the test. These will be the questions which
students see. Create Question is used to create a new question. Click on Create Question.
There are many different kinds of question. One example is a Multiple Choice question.
The Question Title can be a Name or Can be a Number. Question Text is what you are asking
students to respond to. This is the question that assesses student learning. These Options
determine the format of the question and how the multiple answers are displayed and presented
with the question text. Since you are creating a multiple choice question, there is correct
answer and several incorrect answers. You have a text editor so that the answer can
be a video, html, a website, multimedia content, or written text. You select the button next
to whichever answer is the correct answer. There are two text editors for Feedback. One
is for feedback when a student selects the correct answer, and the other is for feedback
when the student selects the incorrect answer. Categories and Keywords are for archiving
the different kinds of questions that you create and being able to find these questions
and re-use them. Instructor Notes cannot be seen by students. They are for instructor
information. "Submit and Create Another" until you have finished creating all the question
that are needed for the test, and then click Submit to Finish. After submitting, you see
a new page with the question. Here, click on one of the Plus Buttons to create a new
question before or after the question you just finished. To change the Point Value of
the question click on the button in the upper right hand corner of the question editor.
This will change the value of the question if you are using the grade center in Blackboard.
Click on "OK" to finish editing the questions on the test. To edit the Options on the Test,
click on the carrot next to the "Example Test" and click on "Edit the Test Options". If you
wanted to add or eliminate questions click on "Edit the Test". In Test Information you
see the text editor and the description that you previously wrote. Check the option "Open
the Test in a New Window" if you want students to complete the test in a new Blackboard window.
In Test Availability make sure that "Make the Link Available" is checked on "yes" or
the students will not be able to see the test. Another setting, "Add a New Announcement for
this Test" will send a message to students email inboxes about the test. The other settings
are used in order to constrain if students can submit more than one test attempt, and
if there is a limit to how much time students have to complete the test. You only have to
include start dates, end dates or due dates if you want to restrict access. If you leave
these blank, the test will be available to students as soon as you finish editing, and
it will stay available until you manually make it "unavailable" by changing the button
above to "No". Self-Assessment Options, Test Results and Feedback to Students, and Test
Presentation are advanced control options for the test, including using tests for self
assessment and for formative assessment. Usually, it is a good idea to make the test presentation
"All at Once" unless you do not want students to see past and future questions when answering
a question. In this case, mark "One at a Time". Finally click on Submit when you are ready
to make the test available to students.
