Welcome to Linesøya.
Linesøya is an island in the municipality of Åfjord in Sør-Trøndelag county. It is inhabited by around 70 people.
The area of Linesøya is about 16,6 square kilometres.
The highest point on Linesøya is on top of Linesfjellet, this is about 230 meters above the ocean level.
Hurtigruten passes Linesøya once a day on its way to Kirkenes.
The bridge to Lines is a cantilever bridge built between Stokkøya and Linesøya and is 315 meters long.
The highest point of the bridge is 16 meters above ocean level.
A while after you have driven over the bridge, you drive by three red boathouses,
an old, grey building, and a board standing next to it.
These information boards are located nearby tourist attrictations and trip destinations on Linesøya.
This is a big boathuse ("storbåtnaust"). It was built n 1870,
and was used to store big fishing boats ("færing"), salmon nets and other fishing gear.
There are few such boat houses left in the municipality, so they must be protected.
The boat house is a symbol of the fishing culture on Linesøya
Geitastua is a cave, which lies about 100 metres above ocean level.
During the stone age, the ocean reached beneath the cave. People travelled there by boat.
Geitastua was a place for sleeping over, like a cabin.
If you are interested in modern history, then you should take a trip out to Øyholmen.
The Germans startet to build an aircraft detection base here during WWII.
They were never done with building the base. This is how the area looks like today.
I am now sitting in one canon stations on Øyholmen, where the Germans set up
aircraft - detecting radars during the occupation of Norway.
There were always about 80 soldiers outstationed there.
Øyholmen was a good place to set up radars,
because the radars could easily spot British aircrafts heading towards the coast of Trøndelag.
Let's look at another building that has cultural meaning for Linesøya.
This building is called "Velhuset". It is the local community house on Linesøya.
Here there have been many sorts of arrangements, like May 17th, confirmation parties, Christmas parties,
and recently, lighting of the Christmas tree as well.
The community house functioned inintially as a school, from 1893 to 1952.
In 1952 this building became the school on Linesøya.
It remained so until spring 2006.
By then, there were so few pupils going there that they were transferred to the school on the mainland.
Agriculture and milk production are the two main businesses on Linesøya.
Tourists, anglers and cabin owners are great income sources as well.
This is the only general store on Linesøya.
It is the most important place for socializing on the island. It has been operating since 1977.
When you are out travelling, you need to know where to sleep. Vågan Feriegård offers, in addition
to housing, a motorboat for ocean fishing, included in the renting price.
The farm also has its own web site where you can book apartments.
Tourism - and serviceindustry will be the main businesses on Linesøya in the far future.
The general store earns well during the summer. Here you see quite a few lovely cabins.
