I just found out that I’m pregnant. Can I nurse a baby while pregnant?
Wow! One in the belly, one on the back, that’s stressful.
Can I nurse my firstborn before the other one is born?
You couldn’t have gotten pregnant unless the first one was nursing far less or you
were supplementing with formula.
Can I make milk while pregnant?
Yes, your body can. But you have to be extra careful about nutrition and hydration, because
you’re essentially eating for three if you try this.
And I have to take prenatal vitamins.
You’ll actually need more than prenatal vitamins. And extra calcium.
I’ve heard that breastfeeding could make me miscarry.
Breastfeeding can cause the muscles of the uterus to contract, but it won’t trigger
early labor.
Can I breastfeed the older child after the next one is born?
You have two ***, don’t you? Yes, that’s called tandem nursing.
Won’t they fight?
Have the firstborn snack on something while you feed the baby. Then let the toddler nurse
as he wants.
Will I make enough milk?
During pregnancy, you make not make as much milk. After childbirth, there will be more
than enough if you are healthy and hydrated.
Nursing a newborn every two hours plus a toddler – I think I’ll feel like a dairy cow.
You’ll be a picture perfect spokesperson for La Leche league.
Or “Got Milk?” posters. Is new mother’s milk safe for toddlers?
Yes, though the toddler might tell you it tastes funny. In some cases, the change in
taste makes the toddler wean themselves.
Is there anything else I need to worry about?
You’re the center of their universe, and this is another area for them to fight about.
The toddler may resent the baby’s attention.
I guess it’s time to introduce him to cookies, though he might say the baby needs a snack
because he needs a cookie.
