Hello, I'm Julia Wilson, I'm Head of Research Information at
Breakthrough Breast Cancer, and I want
to talk to you today about a really exciting study that's just come out
in one of the most prestigious medical journals.
Scientists have amassed information for the last decade or so, and
analysed over 2000 different breast cancers. And what they've found is
that breast cancers can be grouped into at least ten
different types of breast cancer,
and each one will need a specific treatment, and a specific diagnosis.
Why this is so exciting is that it will really pave the way towards
personalised medicine, and so women will be treated according to the
genetic fault of their breast cancer
and treatments will be specific to the individual.
It's really exciting from a research perspective as well because the
Breakthrough Breast Cancer unit at King's College London
provided some of the tissue samples and clinical data for this study, and
they also helped analyse all of this information, helping doctors
in the future decide what is the best treatment for each patient.
It's also really exciting because they identified new genes associated with
different types of breast cancer, and
from this information other scientists can use this and develop new drugs,
new special targeted treatments that will have fewer side effects for women
with breast cancer.
So Breakthrough are really proud to have been involved in a small way
in such a landmark study that will really change the face of breast cancer
in the future. Thank you.
