When I worked in a material science laboratory that dealt with medical devices, that’s
when I became hooked on orthopedic surgery. Because I saw how important the materials
that are used — for example in joint replacement — have such a critical impact on the outcomes
of the surgery.
In my area — in adult reconstructive surgery — a patient will come in typically after
years and years of pain and disability involving their hip or knee. And then to see them back
a few weeks after surgery, where their pain is gone, and because their pain is gone, their
activity level is increased. These are some of the most grateful patients that exist in
all of medicine — where you really, you can really see the impact you’ve had on
their life.
