hi everyone
welcome to the third episode of NGS
I am Salem Al Hosani
in this episode we will do something different
we won't review a console, we will review a game
we need to change this routine you know
but that doesn't mean we won't review the consoles
we will review them later in future episodes
we will start with...
with the game on the back of my head
Super Mario Bros on NES
I think every gamer knows that game
its impossible that's no one heard of it
so here we go
first of all I will talk the history of this game
this game released in 1985
at the launch of U.S NES
this game is designed by the genius Shigeru Miyamoto
and he is one of the greatest game designer in the history
until this day
it was revolutionary when this game released
because it was the first game that shows the side scrolling
which means when the character walks, the camera moves along with it
it was amazing back there
because of that, we saw other video game characters
like Sonic the hedgehog and others
this game got a huge sales
and its one of the best sales on the NES
along with Super Mario Bros 3
its amazing game and its still playable
now we will review the game
this is a nostalgic title screen
this game supports 2 players
like we said before, the side scrolling appeared in this game and we saw it later in other games
anyway lets start
the first player plays as Mario and the second as Luigi
thier mission in this game is saving the princess from Bowser or Koopa in Japaneses version
the controlling is very easy
"A" button for jump and "B" for running
and you will need it a lot to jump over big holes
you progress in the game by going forward, and try to avoid the traps and holes
also you can defeat the enemies
all for reaching to the flag pole and finishing the stage
then you rest in the fort before continuing
its better to jump into the top of the flag pole for more points
about the enemies
there are 3 ways to defeat them
you can stamp on them
or you can break the blocks that they're standing on them
and finally by the fire flower
I will talk about it in seconds
at the beginning you will start with Mini Mario
Mario can gets the Mushroom that makes him bigger
Big Mario can break the blocks easily
unlike Mini Mario
but Big Mario can't go through tiny paths
Big Mario also gets a Fire Flower
it gives the ability to Mario to shoot fire balls
when he gets it, the color of his clothes changes
well...anyway
the "B" button do another job for you
you can shoot fire balls twice in row
and you can defeat most of the enemies with it
but know that you can't defeat some enemies with it
so you need to use another way to defeat them
there no life bar unlike other games
one hit and you're dead
if you are a Big Mario or Fire Mario
and you got damaged by the enemy
you will return to the Mini mario which means Mario can stand 2 hits
if we count Big Mario and Fire Mario
now we will talk about things that Mario can find in his adventure
he can collect the coins that give him a "1up"
also you can find some secret stuff in the block
some of them gives you a "1up" Mushroom
and others gives you a star that makes you invincible for some time
and finally the giant tree
some trees take you to the bonus stages that you collect coins in them
and the other takes you to the secret pipes so you can warp to other stages
about the bonus stages
most of them you will find them in regular stages while progressing
and you can get inside of them by pressing "down"
but you can't get inside in every pipes
also, be careful of these plants that get out of the pipes
you can't kill them unless you have fire power
or by the star
wait until its get inside
and if you stand to the top of the pipe it won't get out until you move aside
so it won't attack you from the inside
let's talk about the world and the stages
there are 8 worlds in this game and each one has 4 stages
most of them are look the same
but its not a big issue as long as its the first side scrolling game
there are regular outdoors stages
,giant hills
, Underground
, night outdoors
, on the long bridge
, Ice stages
, under the water
and finaly the castle
water stages are the most annoying one
because you can't stomp on the enemies
also you have to avoid these annoying jellyfish as much as you can
you need the fire power in these stage because its the only way to kill them
about the castle stages
they are always at the fourth stages of each world
and each one are different from the others in level design
some them by the way are maze stages and you must remember the way you go
there is no boss except one, and its Bowser who appears at the end of the stage
he is very easy
all you can do is to jump over him to get....erm.... an axe??!!
the bridge will be broken after that and he will fall into the lava
or you can use fire flower
about the fire flower you, all you can do is shooting him with fire balls
and he will die after a few hits
the old fashioned way is much faster but it needs focusing and timing
so, defeating him with fire flower is much easier
that does not require a big strategy, just try to avoid his fire shots as mush as you can
but if you got a hit try to get the axe while you're invincible
and thats it
thats the only ways to defeat him but be carefull
he becomes harder
he throws hammers so keep your eyes open
lets talk about the difficulty
the game in general if you are playing it without cheating by finding secret passages
its still hard! yes! I said that!!
but its not ridiculously hard like Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden and others
you can master this difficulty
the main problem of this game back there
that if you lost all lives
and the game is over, you will start at the beginning of the game
but fortunately there is a continue code, so you can continue the game
and not a lot of people heard of it
here is the way
when the game title appears after game over screen
all you do is keep pressing "A" and then press "start" while you still pressing "A"
and you play at the start of the world you died in
not the exact location you died in, only the beginning of the world
not only that, If you beat the game once, you can select the world you want to play once again
there is a way to beat the game much faster
first, play the game at the beginning
when you reach 1-2 section
at the end , when you see these moving platforms
try to go to the above of stage
and keep walking until you reach to the warping pipes
and go to the world 4
keep progressing until you reach 4-2 section
at the first quarter of the stage, at this section
try to find the giant tree, without hitting the wrong invincible blocks, here is the way
as you can see, thats the way, climb the tree after that
you will find the warping pipes once again, go to the world 8
from now on you have to depend on your skills and try to beat the game
and its not that easy
but that's the fastest way to get to the world 8 and beating the game
someone by the way managed to beat the game in 5 minutes and he's is a speed runner
so good luck if you want to break this record
about the flaws
there is not much except the controlling is kinda hard in water stages while you're trying to slow down
the other thing
if you played 2 players mode
the second player can't play until the first player died first
so if the the first player is a professional the second player must wait too long
so good luck second player
that's all I can say about this game in general
In conclusion, this is Super Mario Bros on NES
some players say its an outdated game and its nothing against current gen games
and the others says "NO", this game is still enjoyable and playable even in these days
and graphics and other stuff does not matter, and I agree with them
this game is still playable and enjoyable
and its hard and challenging
its even harder than some current gen games
any collector of retro games
should have the physical copy of this game at least
because its will be a nice charm in your collection
Salem Al Hosani from Nostalgic Gamer Show, thank you all for watching and I will see you again
