So now we are getting ready to start the massage. We are going to go ahead and we have our blanket
all laid out here today. We're going to go ahead and provide the massage right here on
the floor and our pillow. We want to make sure that it is comfortable so that he can
lay down on it and feel comfortable and that I can reach him so what I am going to ask
you to do Riley is go ahead and lay down with your head on the pillow facing up, let's make
sure you are nice and comfortable. Let's scoot down just a little bit. We want to make sure
your head and shoulders are supported. How does that feel? Are you feeling o'kay? Are
your warm enough? Is it o'kay if I give you a massage. It's important that you always
ask permission from the child if they would like to receive a massage even if you are
just simply in your mind doing something really simple like you're massaging their head or
massaging their hands, it is very important that you ask permission so the child has a
chance to say yes or no to receiving touch. If Riley said that he did not want to receive
a massage today we wouldn't do a massage. We would wait until another time or later
in the day to try again but we would always ask first. It is very important. I am going
to probably today try to massage some of your face, is that o'kay with you? Check in even
on the part of the body that you are massaging and make sure it's o'kay. It might be a part
of the body that Riley might be fine with my massaging his hands but maybe not his head.
So just double check in absolutely make sure each time if you are moving on to different
body parts that it's o'kay to receive a massage and that he is comfortable. Make sure he is
comfortable. Keep an eye on his face, his body language at any time during the massage.
He may not tell us if he becomes uncomfortable but his body might so watch his face and his
body and make sure that at all times he is comfortable.
