- WE ARE BACK WITH JAMES MARSDEN,
AND HE IS IN THE MOVIE "THE BEST OF ME," RIGHT?
WHAT IS THE MOVIE ABOUT?
- IT'S ANOTHER NICHOLAS SPARKS FILM,
WHICH IS-- IT'S A ROMANTIC DRAMA.
AND IT'S BASICALLY ABOUT TWO HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS
WHO FALL MADLY IN LOVE WITH ONE ANOTHER,
AND LIFE SORT OF TEARS THEM APART FOR ABOUT 20 YEARS.
AND THEN IN THEIR 40s-- EARLY 40s, LATE 30s--
THEY GET BACK TOGETHER
THROUGH THE PASSING OF A FRIEND,
AND THEY'RE SORT OF MET WITH THE IDEA OF, YOU KNOW,
"DO WE REKINDLE THIS ROMANCE?"
SHE'S MOVED ON WITH HER LIFE, HE'S MOVED ON WITH HIS,
BUT THEY CAN'T--YOU KNOW, THEY CAN'T GET OVER THEIR PAST,
AND SO THEY'RE MET WITH THAT IN THAT MOMENT.
- WELL, WHAT'S TO THINK ABOUT? IT SEEMS OBVIOUS TO ME.
GET BACK TOGETHER. - JUST GET BACK TOGETHER.
- SO--AND YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART--DID YOU--
DO YOU HAVE ONE THAT YOU REMEMBER,
AND WOULD YOU REKINDLE IT?
- [laughs]
OH, THIS IS A TOUGH ONE.
I'M ON THE SPOT.
I DID HAVE ONE.
I WAS WITH A GIRL FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS
IN HIGH SCHOOL AND INTO COLLEGE,
AND SHE WAS A VERY SWEET GIRL.
IT WAS VERY INNOCENT, AND--
YEAH, THEN WE BROKE UP WHEN I MOVED TO L.A. AND DIDN'T--
IT WAS TOUGH TO KEEP A LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP.
- SO YOU HAVEN'T SPOKEN TO HER SINCE THEN?
- NO. - HERE SHE--NO, I'M KIDDING.
- OH, GOD.
[laughter]
[cheers and applause]
WOW. - I'M SORRY.
- WOW. THAT WAS VERY GOOD.
- BUT MAYBE IT WOULD BE GOOD.
- NO, IT WOULD'VE BEEN--
IT WOULD'VE BEEN FINE,
BUT I WOULD'VE--
THAT WOULD'VE BEEN AMAZING...
[laughter]
FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS.
- NOW I WISH WE WOULD'VE DONE IT.
OH, BOY. WHEW.
ALL RIGHT, LET ME GET MY HEART RATE BACK DOWN.
- BUT YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT SHE'S, LIKE, LOOKING AT YOU,
WHEREVER SHE IS NOW, GOING, "OH, THAT WAS MY BOYFRIEND."
AND SHE'S PROBABLY TELLING PEOPLE THAT,
AND THEY'RE LIKE, "OH, YEAH, RIGHT," BUT NOW--
- YEAH, I DON'T KNOW.
I MEAN, YOU SAW YOUNG PICTURES OF ME.
I WASN'T THAT COOL, SO SHE'S--
SHE'S HAPPILY MARRIED, AND-- WITH KIDS RIGHT NOW,
I THINK LIVING IN DALLAS, SO...
- OH, YOU KNOW THAT? SO YOU HAVE TRACKED HER DOWN.
[laughter]
