As I prepare to transition from my role as Director, Office of Marine and Aviation Operations
and the NOAA Corps, I am filled with a wide range of emotions—excitement for future
endeavors, sadness for leaving work that I enjoy, but mostly thankfulness for the opportunity
to serve alongside the men and women of the world’s finest scientific data collection
organization. I am very proud of the work you do every day in providing this Nation
with the necessary oceanographic, atmospheric, hydrographic and fisheries data necessary
to make decisions regarding the use of our oceans and atmosphere. Whether at sea conducting
surveys or flying into a category 5 hurricane, you delivered and made a difference in the
lives of American’s each and every day. Words cannot express my sincere appreciation
to each of you for your dedication and professionalism. As I begin this new chapter in my life, I
want to especially thank my wife Cindy for blessing my life and supporting me during
my 32 year career. Regardless of the duty, the hours, or the demands--Cindy encouraged
me, made a wonderful home for our sons, and managed her own career.
As you might imagine, OMAO and the NOAA Corps are like family to me. I am comforted by the
fact that Rear Admiral Michael Devany has been nominated for Director, OMAO and NOAA
Corps. He has enjoyed a diverse career of operational sea, scientific, and management
positions and is the right person to lead the organization in meeting the needs of NOAA
and our Nation in the 21st Century. Finally, it has been a pleasure to be your
Director. Keep up the great work! May God bless you with happiness and success always.
