Hello, I'm Sifu Mallon with the Clearwater KungFu Center. This is my assistant Melissa
and this is KungFu for health. Leg strengthening; strong legs are an important factor in Chinese
martial arts. To develop this we have several different leg exercises. We're going to be
working on what's called our Monkey Jump. Monkey Jump is performed in a squatting position
jumping up. I'll demonstrate it first, and then I'll have Melissa go through several
repetitions so you can see and I can point out some of the finer details. To start, your
feet are out to the outside width of your shoulders, your toes are pointing out, and
as you squat down, it's important that you squat and drop your center gravity between
your heels. Your hands touch the floor, and your body doesn't lean back but leans forward
slightly. Your head stays erect, you don't want your head to drop down. You're going
to thrust your body upward, pushing your shoulders up, head up and straightening your legs all
the way. Your arms just hang down by your side; and then back down. And you'll see that
I'm landing soft, I'm using my toes to absorb the shock, and I'm letting my hands touch
the floor for stability. Melissa come forward. Now she starts her feet a little bit wider
apart, and her toes turning outward. Now she'll squat down, and the hands fall in front of
the body. Now from here she's going to thrust herself up, jump, and land; again; good. This
is how we perform the Monkey Jump, KungFu for health.
