Voice: We all struggle to look after our money sometimes. But here's some advice, that might
help you out.
Man 1: So what I do to deal with my money, is I split my money into three parts.
I pay my bills first, to make sure they're covered. Put some money aside for a rainy day,
so, I don't get stung with an expensive month. And everything else is for the every day.
By doing that, what I do is I make sure all my important things are covered.
I've got money put aside so that when there's an expensive month I can cover that. And everything else
I can enjoy.
Woman 1: I just want people to think about where they put their money. Not just think
about banks, but think about credit unions which can be better financially.
Woman 2: Don't go shopping when you're hungry, you'll buy more than you need.
Woman 3: In order to save money, if you cut down the amount of takeaways you buy, and
if you plan what you're going to cook for the week, you can buy in bulk from markets,
rather than supermarkets which is a lot cheaper.
Woman 4: Don't take all your money out at once. Take it one day, take it another day.
Take it one week, take it another week. Just don't take all your money out at once.
Woman 5: When moving and on a low income if you remember to check Free-cycles and furniture
reclaim charities for cheap and free furniture.
Woman 6: A really good way to manage your money is to open a basic bank account. And
have your wages and benefits paid into the bank account. And then set up direct debits
to pay your bills like your gas, your water, your electricity, your council tax, your TV
license. And then I have a standing order set up to a credit union account that you've
opened. And after you've been saving with them for a while you'll be able to access
a loan at affordable interest rates.
Woman 7: When you work out your budget, make sure you convert all the figures, either monthly
or weekly, so it works.
Man 2: When you go online, make sure that you're safe, especially if you're looking
at an account, like a utility bill, or a bank account. At the top of your browser you'll
see a little bios with the address of the website you've gone to. Make sure that the
first letters are h t t p s. That shows that the website is encrypted and is secure for
you. So nobody else can look at your information while you're doing a transaction. And also
you may see a padlock which can either be at the top, or sometimes it's around the bottom
of the browser. And as long as you have the padlock and it's closed, as in locked, then
you know that you're safe online.
Woman 8: Go shopping with a friend then you can share the multi-buys.
Woman 9: Banks have a legal obligation to make sure that everyone can access their services.
So if you need extra help, like a BSL interpreter, or documentation in large print, or in braille,
then it's the bank's responsibility to provide it for you free of charge.
Woman 10: Good luck managing your money in the future.
