Today we shall discuss about Nageshwar Jyotirling.
This is mentioned in Shiv Purana's Koti Rudra Samhita.
This is the Tenth Jyotirlinga.
Lets find out more about this!
Daruka (She-Devil) lived with her demon husband Daruk in the woods.
Daruka received a boon from Parvati, the boon was she could fly away with the whole forest.
Once she & her husband decided to destroy the whole forest.
The people living in the forests, shared their misery with Maharishi Aurav.
Maharishi Aurav decided to punish the demons by cursing them.
They will be destroyed if the fight on earth or destroy anyone's penance.
When gods heard about this, they decided to attack these demons.
The demons knew if they fought on earth, that would be end of them.
But if they didn't fight, the gods will defeat them.
At that moment, Daruka flew away with the whole forest, in the middle of the ocean.
The demons lived on the island.
Once the island was visited by few men on boats.
All these men were captured by the demons.
One of them was Lord Shiva devotee - Supriya.
He started his penance inside the jail & asked others also to join him.
Everyday they kept on praying on Lord Shiva.
When Daruk was informed about it, he threatened Supriya & wanted to kill him.
Supriya prayed to Lord Shiva & He appeared in front of him.
Lord Shiva destroyed all demons but Daruk escaped & returned to his wife's aid.
Lord Shiva told the men, that they can pray & offer penance to all gods in the forest.
Demons have no place in this forest.
Daruka was scared after hearing Lord Shiva & she re-called Parvati.
She asked Parvati to protect her new born.
Parvati then spoke to Lord Shiva & requested him to let their offspring live on this island.
Lord Shiva agreed & blessed them Tathastu.
To take care of my followers, I shall remain here in the form of linga.
That's how Lord Shiva was called Nageshwar.
That's the story of Lord Nageshwar.
But the story of jyotirlinga is a more complicated.
According to Shivpurana & Dwadasa Jyotirlinga Stotram it's situated in Darukvan.
But there are three famous temples by the name Nageshwar.
First is in Dwarka, Gujarat.
Second is Almora, Uttrakhand.
Third is in Hingoli, Maharashtra.
