halloween is quickly approaching and the kids are always anxious to head out to
the local pumpkin patch and pick out their favorite pumpkins
but we always question how far in advance do we carve those pumpkins
so they aren't plagued with mold and mildew for Halloween night
so we thought we would do a test on several different options for preserving
your pumpkins this year
the first option is silica gel you know those packets that you find in your
shoes
and in your purses when you first purchased them then the wet and forget
the ultimate mold mildew and algae remover Vaseline
clear coat paint and last but not least
so off to the pumpkin patch we went to find our
test pumpkins we looked for pumpkins with similar shape
and size when carving the pumpkins we made sure to clean them out entirely
leading less of a breeding ground for mold spores first we opened two silica gel
packets and put them in our first test pumpkin
then we did a thick layer of Vaseline on pumpkin number two
on the inside of the lid inside of the pumpkin
and on all the cut-outs then we moved on to the clear coat paint
again treating the inside the pumpkin cut-outs and the lid
our next application was the Wet And Forget pumpkin we mixed five parts water with
one part Wet And Forget
and made sure to soak our pumpkin thoroughly and finally
our bleached method we mixed one gallon of water with 1 tablespoon of bleach
and soaked our pumpkin for several hours this option also suggested keeping a
spray bottle mixture and treating every two to three days
we also decided to try to say maintenance program with the Wet And Forget
so we just used our Wet And Forget Indoor product
we also had a control pumpkin off to the side so we could get an idea how fast
an untreated pumping would turn black than we sat all our pumpkins together and set
up a time lapse camera
to take pictures every couple hours by day ten we had only one pumpkin left
that didn't show any signs of mold or mildew so in order
from worst to best these are the applications
silica gel Vaseline
clear coat paint
Bleach
and wet and forget
the Wet And Forget technique was by far the best method for preserving pumpkins
what we found interesting was after each application of the Wet And Forget Indoor
our pumpkin became even whiter on the inside based upon our test you can get
at least another two weeks enjoyment out of those jack o lanterns
if they're treated with wet and forget and then maintained every two to three
days with Wet And Forget Indoor
