Many patients ask me at the time of diagnosis what question should I be asking you Dr. Kozloff?
What are important questions I may ask someone else if I was to see another physician or
see the surgeon? I think that what one wants to know is what stage you are, what treatment
options you have, what is considered the standard of care, what are clinical, if there is clinical
trials available to be treated with, what are the options to standard of care as well
as what are the outcomes for the different treatment options. I think that is exceptionally
important when one comes to chemotherapy, one wants to know the benefits as well as
the side effects. If this is going to help me know what kind of side effects may I have
from this treatment. I think that the other thing that you should know is, how many patients
you treat with colon cancer. Will I be just one of two in a year, or I be 50 or 60 in
a year or you treat a 100 per year, I think it makes a big difference to how many patients
you treat and how are up-to-date your doctor is with the newest treatments for colorectal
cancer and that may help you make a decision about staying with you doctor, seeking a second
opinion, and making decisions about how you should be treated. Certainly, you want to
know benefits, side effects, and outcomes both in a positive and negative respect and
those are questions that you should feel free to ask your physician and those are the questions
that he should definitely give you answers for.
