Hello and welcome to Cupcake Addiction's Iron Man Cupcake Tutorial where I'll be showing
how to make this great Iron Man cupcake. I'm actually collaborating on this tutorial with
Choppa from Cakes by Choppa and he will be showing you how to make this awesome Iron
Man full-sized cake. So why not pair the two together?
Tools and equipment that we will be using today:
I have a couple of piping tips - any size you like. I've just picked 2 different sized
circular piping tips. A few cocktail sticks or toothpicks.
I've got a little bit of cornstarch or cornflour in a shaker.
I've got a very sharp pointed knife. 3 paintbrushes. 2 of which are going to be
kept dry. This one's actually a make-up brush. That's just going to be for applying some
luster dust. And another one which is going to be our wet paintbrush.
We've got a just a regular butter knife. I've got a fondant rolling pin but a regular
rolling pin will do. I've got our cupcake ready to ice.
I've got just some standard water-based food coloring in blue and in black.
As I've mentioned, I've got a couple of different luster dusts. So I've got gold and I've got
red. They're a bit of an optional extra but they will add a little bit of dimension, a
little bit of shine to our Iron Man cupcake today.
I've got fondant. You can also use modeling chocolate. And I've got mine in 3 different
colors. I've got a very small amount of white and then I colored sort of a bit of a mustardy
yellow color and then a maroon-y red color. So this is going to be the gold with obviously
that gold luster dust on it and this one's going to be our shiny red one's we apply that
luster dust A little bit of our perfectly pipeable buttercream
frosting. We have a link to that on our channel and in the description box below. So check
that out if you really need a great frosting recipe.
And I've got here just a little template. I will leave a link to this template in the
description box below so you can print those out. Otherwise, you can cut him out free hand.
Let's get started. First stop, we're going to frost our cupcake.
So we're going to just take some of that buttercream frosting and I'm just going to start by spreading
it out to the edges. So you want quite a generous amount of buttercream frosting on that. And
I'm going to build up the back or one side of the cupcake quite a bit more than the front
because I want to kind of angle his head down a little bit. So I'm putting quiet a bit there
on the back. I'm just going to smoosh it around with the knife and smooth off the edges. Try
not to get too much of it around the edges of the cupcake case.
Now from here, I want to just grade it down so it looks like we've put a lot of frosting
on there but we are going to take that down a bit and that's going to give our Iron Man
head a bit of height at the back and it's going to go down lower at his chin. Pop that
off to the side. Now I'm going to take that maroon or that
red fondant and just roll out a circle. Little bit of cornflour down just to prepare
our surface to stop our fondant from sticking. Give it a little knead. Roll it into a ball.
That would give us a nice circle shape when we roll out. Squish it between my hands and
roll. You'll see I like to keep my fondant moving. So I just give it a couple of rolls,
pick it up, rotate it. Couple of rolls, pick it up, rotate it. You can roll it as thick
or as thin as you like. I've also got...I think I've forgot to mention
in my tools and equipment. I've got a circle cookie cutter. The one that I've got is 8
and a half centimeters the equivalent is 3 and a half inches. But I've really just measured
it. It's about two sizes bigger than the top of my cupcake. So if you look at that ratio
there, it's a little bit bigger than the top of the cupcake.
I'm going to cut out a nice circle shape, getting rid of that excess. And I am going
to place it on top. Don't worry if you've got a little bit of cornstarch on it. It's
okay. We're going to be luster dusting it anyway.
Okay, so I'm going to shake it around that high point in the frosting. And I'm just going
to smooth that down to the edges. And I'm going to leave the bottom open. So what you
want to do is you want to kind of, you're changing the shape of the top of the cupcake.
So it's not going to be so round. It's going to be more of a head shape. So you can see
there, I'm leaving that bottom [flat] open. This is going to be the basis for our Iron
Man mask. Give it a little smooth off. We're going to take that red luster dust and give
it a good luster. So with my luster dust, you'll see there it's just a very fine sparkly
type of powder. It's not a glitter. It's called luster dust if you're looking for it.
So I take some out of the pot, put it into the lid and take my dry paintbrush and kind
of just tap it in there a few times. You don't want to get too much of the luster dust in
any one go. You'll end up with big clumps of it. And you'll see here, I'm just rotating
it. So I'm just applying make-up if you're a make-up wearer, if you wear powdered foundation
or anything. Now we're going to take out our yellow fondant
or yellow modeling chocolate, whichever you're using. Roll it out. We want to roll this out
quite thick because we want the mask to really stand out on the top of this cupcake. So once
again, rolling to into a ball, squishing it into a bit of a disc and popping out a little
bit of our cornflour. We're going to pop it down. Take my rolling
pin. And because I do want it to be really thick I'm not going to be too fussy about
rolling it too much. That's about the thickness that I've gone for.
Now I'm going to take that template. I've cut out the gold mask part of that template
and I'm just going to cut around it with that lovely really pointy knife.
Alright, so you should have...still a bit of a rough shape there. Now it's time for
the gold luster dust and I'm going to really give that a nice luster. I'm using a make-up
brush, either a nice soft paintbrush or a make-up brush will do. Just gives you a really
nice even application. Now from here, we're just going to take out
little nicks in his chin. Just even that up. And I'm going to take that circle cutter again
and I'm just going to make a bit of a line, just about where the fondant comes out here
on the sides. So I just want to line up the edges of the blunt edge, not the sharp edge,
of the cookie cutter and I'm just going to make a bit of a guideline. Push it in there.
And that's where we're going to start digging out our little space for the eyes.
So for the eyes. I'm just going to cut in. Don't cut too deep. You don't want to go all
the way through the fondant. And just use the tip of your knife just to
dig it out. It doesn't have to be neat because we are going to fill that up with some fondant.
And then on the other side. Make sure that you start from the same distance from either
edge so that your eyes are a nice even distance apart. It doesn't end up looking cross-eyed
or anything. Okay, so it's time to stick him down. Stick
that mask down. I'm just going to take a little bit of water and I'm just going to brush it
on the back. Just brushing it on the back. Okay, now positioning it on the center of
my mask. Just place it down and just position it 'til you're happy that it's all sitting
nice and evenly. Alright, now from here, I want to just take
just the edge of that knife. And I'm just going to indent a little bit under the cheekbone
and just kind of just put a little bit of a grade on that side piece. And again and
that's just going to give him a bit of a chiseled kind of a jaw look, stop him from looking
so rounded on the edges or so flat on the edges I should say. And then I'm going to
do that again up here. So really just sort of digging the edge of the knife, not the
sharp edge, the blunt edge. And again. Lovely. That just gives him a little bit of dimension.
Now we're going to take this little bit of white fondant and pop in the eyes. Just a
really little bit of white fondant and you might need to just have a little play with
this so that you've got the right amount for your sized eye cavity. Take a really little
bit of water -- a little dab in there and a little dab in there. And I've just rolled
that out into a bit of a tic tac kind of a shape. Push it in. The same on the other side.
Alright, now just to neaten those up, I'm just going to take my sharp knife and just
make sure that they're all nice and filling out those corners, looking kind of angry.

3 times a week and we've always got new stuff coming out. So we would love to have you drop
by. Alright, it's time to start painting our black.
Actually before I do that, I'm also just going to take that knife and just pop in a bit of
a mouth for him. So back of the knife I'm using again because I don't want to risk cutting
through that fondant. And then I'm going to go straight across. Just on the edges, I'm
going down on both sides for a bit of a frown. And on then on the sides, it kind of kicks
back up again, sort of like a little V on the sides there. We've got our spaces ready
to start painting. I'm going to use a combination of a nice fine
paintbrush, a really nice fine paintbrush, and cocktails sticks or toothpicks dipped
in black food coloring. So the first one that I want to do -- and do try and have a really
nice steady hand here -- is going to be the mouth. You've got that nice little indent
so you should just be able to fill that indent in with that blackened cocktail stick.
Okay, so you should have something that's looking a little bit like this. We've just
edged of those main little lines and I've also popped just a couple of little lines
up either side to give a bit of definition to that head.
Now we're going to get our paintbrush and a little bit of this blue food coloring. Now
I'm going to dip that paintbrush into the blue, just a little bit of blue. I'm going
to do straight blue food coloring on the bottom section of the eye. And then I'm going to
dip it in some water. Choppa actually did this on his cake and I
thought it was a fantastic idea so I copied him. Thanks, Choppa.
A little bit of water not too much and that's just going to disperse that blue. So you're
just going to work it up a little bit so that it's kind of giving him a bit of a glow. Up
either of the edges, so thicker at the bottom, up either of the edges, and a then nice little
thin line a bit on top. Alright, so now that our glowing blue eyes
are done, it's time to start doing our nice thick black edges. So with the edges, I'm
going to do them quite thick so that you can see them when you look down on the cupcake.
If you do them too thin and to the sides, you really got to turn it around. So I'm going
to do them quite thick. Come up nice and close so you can see what
I'm doing there. See how thick I'm making them around? You should just be able to follow
the line of your gold mask. Alright, so we've edged that one off. Final
step is just going to be to put a little bit of detailing on the red part of the mask.
And this is where our two circular cutters, either piping tips or actual circular cutters
are fine. Just here it near his check bone, I'm just going to make a nice indent with
that first one and then just a half indent with that second to give him a bit of a side
circle. And I'm going to edge that off with a little bit of black food dye with that toothpick.
So once again, you should have your little guidelines. It's not going to be absolutely
perfect but your little guideline for that black food dye to go into and then we're going
to do exactly the same on the other side. Okay, so we've done those lovely little circles.
And now we're just going to draw a nice little double triangle in the center of the top of
his head and that will finish him off. Alright, so there you have your fantastic
Iron Man cupcakes. I think you'll agree, they're pretty neat for any sort of Iron Man-themed
occasion and you can see them here next to Choppa's awesome Iron Man full-sized cake.
