Hi this is Miranda Thacker
with your KYTC minute
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is gearing up for snow and ice season.
State maintenance crews are preparing equipment and supplies that will help keep the state
moving when the snow flies.
Statewide, the cabinet has more than a thousand snow plows ready to hit the roads.
Stockpiles of rock salt, salt brine and calcium chloride have been replenished.
Three-hundred-61 contract units will also be available to assist state snow and ice
forces.
The cabinet uses advanced forecasting tools available from the National Weather Service
to prepare for developing weather.
Kentucky has 27,583 miles of state-owned highways, including 762 interstate miles, 650 parkway
miles and almost 3,700 state primary miles.
Interstates, parkways and primary routes are the highest priorities during snow and ice
events.
As those routes are treated, crews work out to secondary routes.
Motorists can get updated snow and ice road condition reports by dialing 511 or visiting
511.ky.gov.
