Fran Kick: We have intentionally strived and struggled since we knew we had "A Nation
at risk"
to program our kids to be better than they were and that is good. We want kids
to be improving.
The problem gets to be is if they're programmed to be perfect and yet they
don't figure out how to do it on their own.
If they don't know how to fail or learn from their mistakes,
if they can't learn to organize things for themselves because someone else is
always setting something up or cleaning something up for them,
then how they deal with the reality of the world that will be thrown in their
face.
We already know now that kids in college talk to their parents more than
any other previous generation on this planet. They are sometimes calling their
parents with the results of a quiz
from the class they receive the grade and asking their parent to talk to the
professor.
Imagine in the professor's shock: "What?!" [Laughter]
"I don't talk to parents. Tell them to call the Dean of Students!"
