** wasnt' there for too long were you? [we just had to live where we could live when we first came here]
[because there wasn't no houses wasn't very plentiful] **really? [nods]
**was this a new house when you bought it? [no, somebody.. somebody had lived in it]
[we did all this panellin' and.. stuff.. ]
** Almost 3:00? [yeah it is.. 3:00] [When did you say you had to leave?] **4:00. I'm already packed and everything..
**So you got a job at the nursing home after that? [yeah..
[there's this couple that worked out in the nursing home and they needed some help ...
[ and they knew me you know-- real well so they come here beggin me to go to work for em...]
**what were you doing there? [Well I worked in the kitchen..] **You were a cook? [nods yes]
[I made the deserts and the salads.. and stuff like htat.. made dinner rolls and they got to callin them "Opal Rolls"] ** Opal Rolls? [laughs]
[cause they were .. everybody just loved em so they called them "Opal Rolls"] **laughs*
** 21 years? that's a long time to work in a nursing home..
[Well there was another nursing home over there on Taylor Street, back over in west part of town I worked there first]
[and then when this one over on.. florida was built well then I went over there. ]
** same people you worked for? [ No same kind of job but I just.. me and one of the other cooks went over there]
**you didn't like it on Taylor st? [I liked it alright, but we just wanted to go to the new one - laughs ] the brand new one..]
[they needed somebody to work in there so we went over there] **you got laid off from that place? [From the last one I worked at... yeah.. I was laid off]
[and then they tried to get me to go back and I wouldnt' do it...] *really? Why not?
[didn't want to.. laughs... they laid me off! so I stayed off!]
**that was that huh.. [thaat was that..] ** well not too bad I guess.. [That might teach em! .. They begged me and begged me and begged me]
[even some of the little people that lived in there begged me to come back] ** really? [yeah.. but I just felt like I was through workin ]
** I vaguely remember that... I must have been really young when that happened [I was working there when you arrived]
**I remember you working there and getting laid off barely..
[boy you couldn't have been very old.. I would go down there from work yall lived on Jackson..]
[ and I'd go there by there going home from work... almost every day to visit yall a little bit]
[and went with.. . your mom and your dad to the hospital when you arrived.. ]
** I don't remember that! <laughs> [I went with them there... ]
** I can remember Edie changing my diapers.. [Yeah it was you that was riding your bicycle and broke your arm.. is that arm weak now?]
** not weak but there are some parts that are messed up on it. I still have the scar..
[it broke it up pretty good I think... ] *yep.. and I can't (moves hand..) do that.. [that's finger won't lay down? ]
[huh! they did a bad job on it! ] *they did an ok job.. I mean I have an arm.. my hand still works..
**not too bad I guess could be worse [well it was broke in two or three places I think?]
**you broke your bone once didn't you? I remember you telling me you shattered your leg when you were young
[yeah a car backed into me] *how old were you then ? [well I was still going to school.. I wasn't over 16 years old I don't think]
[ a girl was going to school she had a car that had a running boards on it and uh...]
[all us silly bunch of kids like we were would hop on that running board and get a ride as far as we could...]
[whenever she.. whenever we was leaving school.. and she backed into another car.. and I was on that side]
[where the running board was.. and it smashed my leg....]
[It wasn't broke.. they said it wasn't but I think it was.. cause I couldn't walk for a long time...]
**Did you have to be in any crutches or anything? [No... everybody would just.. carry me.. ]
**laughs that's a long time to be carried.. [Yeah...]
[wasn't no crutches at that time.. anyway.. I would walk with a chair]
[with a chair.. put my knee in the chair and walk that way..
[And then whenever I finally went to school why they'd help me from there
**How big of a school did you go to? [Well I went to the 12th grade..] **How many people were there? [Not a lot.. but plenty.. ] **Wasn't a big area of Oklahoma was it? [ Mmmhmmm..]
[At one time we had a teacher-- he was an Indian teacher.. indian man he was real good. ] **American Indian? [Yeah.. he was a real good.. real good teacher..]
**Now you have native american blood don't you? Which side? [It comes from my daddy's side I think?] *Really? [Nods]
**hat tribe? [That's what we don't know.. if we knew we would try to get our medicines and everything you know for free.. get to go to the doctor free and everything.. Do you know Josie? ]
