Darth Vader was the Sith apprentice and main enforcer of Emperor Palpatine, also known
as Darth Sidious.
He began his apprenticeship with the complete betrayal of the Jedi Order. He led the 501st
Battalion into the Jedi Temple and killed every Jedi they could find, including the
younglings. When Padme expressed horror at his actions, he Force-choked her to near death.
He was stopped by his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and they dueled on the volcanic planet
of Mustafar. Kenobi defeated Anakin, and left him badly burned and dismembered. Darth Sidious
rescued his apprentice and made him more machine than man.
Believing his wife and child dead, Vader delved deeper into darkness, becoming an instrument
of destruction and terror for Palpatine’s new Galactic Empire. After nearly two decades
of serving the Emperor, Vader learned that he was not responsible for Padme’s death,
and that his son survived. He began a plot to join with his son and destroy Palpatine.
But Luke refused to follow his father into darkness.
Twenty three years after becoming Darth Vader, he was offered a chance at redemption. Luke
allowed himself to be captured by the Empire, and attempted to bring his father back to
the light. When it was clear Luke could not be turned to the Dark Side, Emperor Palpatine
began torturing him to death using Force lightning. Hearing his son’s pleas for help, Vader
betrayed his Master, and threw him to his death.
In his final moments of life, Vader ceased to be, and he was Anakin Skywalker once more.
His sacrifice allowed him to become one with the Force and live on in spirit.
