I MEAN, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE TO PUT THAT DISCLAIMER AT THE END OF
THAT STATEMENT FOR LEGAL REASONS BUT SO MANY WOMEN HAVE COME
FORWARD AND HE HAS BEEN SUED NOW MULTIPLE TIMES.
AND I THINK THERE'S JUST TOO MUCH SMOKE FOR THERE NOT TO BE
FIRE. BUT WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT THIS
COVER IS THAT, YOU KNOW, AS A MINORITY CULTURE IN THIS
COUNTRY, WE'VE ALWAYS HAD TO PUT OUR BEST FOOT FORWARD JUST TO BE
SEEN AS EQUAL.
AND SO I UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE STRUGGLE WITH THIS COVER.
THEY FEEL LIKE IT'S -- THE INTENTIONS TO BESMIRCH THIS
IMAGE OF THIS PERFECT AFRICAN-AMERICAN FAMILY BUT
THAT'S NOT WHAT THE COVER IS INTENDED TO DO.
IT'S INTENDED TO SPEAK FRANKLY BOTH TO THE GREAT EFFECT HE HAS
ON THE CULTURE AND THE INCREDIBLE DEEP, PAINFUL
HEARTBREAK PEOPLE ARE FEELING AT HIS BETRAYAL.
[APPLAUSE] SHERYL: THAT'S RIGHT.
AISHA: AND I THINK THAT FOR ANYBODY TO MOVE FORWARD PAST
SOMETHING AS TRAUMATIC AND AS HEARTBREAKING AS THIS, WE HAVE
TO BE HONEST. THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN CULTURE, WE
ARE NOT A MONOLITH. WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME THING.
WE ARE NOT ALL PERFECT. AND WE ARE NOT ALL BILL COSBY.
AND WE HAVE TO HAVE AN AUTHENTIC HONEST CONVERSATION ABOUT WHO
THIS MAN WAS WHAT, HE MEANT TO US AND WHAT HE'S DONE.
I DON'T THINK THE GREATNESS OF "THE COSBY SHOW" IS RUINED FOR
ME BECAUSE HE, AS A PERSON IS IN MY OPINION, A TERRIBLE HUMAN
BEING.
I DON'T THINK THAT THOSE TWO THINGS CANCEL EACH OTHER OUT.
BUT WE HAVE TO DEAL HONESTLY WITH THE FACT THAT FOR ALL
INTENTS AND PURPOSES, THIS GUY IS A SOCIOPATH AND WE HAVE TO
LOOK AT IT HONESTLY.
