So this is my thing that I just made using the shopbot.
It's not totally done, this is actually only the rough cut, I still need to do the finishing
cut.
And, as you can see, it is LARGE, because I am dumb
and doubled the size of what I was cutting arbitrarily
because the tool bit I was using wouldn't clear if I hadn't doubled it.
And instead of changing to a smaller tool bit, OBVIOUSLY the best idea is to make it
HUGE!
So, uh, I have no idea what I'm going to do with this.
At all.
Still needs to do the finishing cut.
And the profile.
Uh, it took about 23 minutes, but that's because pauses count, apparently, in the runtime.
I did stop it a few times to check on some things.
Uh, I actually dropped the RPM from 12000 to
uhhhhhhhh...
whatever 180 times 60 is.
Cause I'm bad at math. Um, calculators all the way.
And it greatly increased the quality of the finish here. See? I haven't gotten a splinter
yet and I've touched this like four times.
As you can see, some of the letters are still connected, I'm hoping the finishing cut will
clear that up, but because of the size of the tool bit I think it's neglecting these
areas.
However, you can still read it, so I'm pretty proud of it.
And, hopefully, I will get a time-lapse going for the finishing cut even though it's actually
supposed to take less time according to the software than the roughing cut.
And this was made using Partworks 3D. I actually just laid out my name in 3D text using sketchup,
exported it to .DXF, gave Partworks 3D all of my specifications, and it just... went
to work.
So I'm honestly very surprised that this worked the first time, and I am still waiting for
something to go wrong.
So I will now commence the time-lapse.
Okay, so now we will begin the time-lapse of the finishing cut....and that's about all
there is to say about it.
Of course, we will be wearing our personal protection equipment.
Safety first, kids!
Of course, you might actually be able to...er, be wanting to be able to see this, so maybe
some zoom is in order.
Yes sir, zoom.
Alright, let's get started!
[Shopbot reving up]
[Benny Hill Theme (best timelapse soundtrack ever)]
Finally done!
I don't know how long that was for you guys, but it was about 30 minutes for me.
So, as you can see, the finishing cut did, in fact, happen.
Um, it seems to have made the edges of my letters kinda wavy. Um, like the bit's just
touched off on it slightly.
And there's some issues over on the right side, because apparently where I screwed it
down was right over a MASSIVE HOLE in our spoiler board.
Um, I kinda like the wavy effect though, it's alright.
This T and I didn't disconnect, and neither did this R and I, but that's okay, you can
still read it.
It actually came OUT of the wood, so I'm pretty happy about that.
A little sanding on the edges and it'll be good for...
Something someday. Maybe. Somehow.
Actually, one of the things that might not appear in the time-lapse because I moved the
gantry up to about here which I just found out means you can't see anything where I had
the camera positioned.
Uh, is the blower on the shopbot actually clogged up on me.
Uh, I am just so good at chipload...
I was taking out such large chips of wood as I was milling that it actually jammed up
inside the snuffleupagus here.
So, I actually had to like take the hose out and vacuum it out.
So that's what took most of the time.
Uh, yeah.
Go FabLab!
Word.
