The Students' Union does so many different things. We raise more money for charity than
any other student group in Europe. We have over 1,000 people who represent you academically.
We have 206 clubs and societies, 76 sports clubs, everything. In terms of which is the
most popular, probably the sports clubs and societies. We have around 16,000 people involved
in those which is almost half the entire University so it's a great thing that we're very proud
of, and yeah, we do loads of things.
We really believe that people's education is more than just a degree, so that's why
we have 206 clubs and societies so everyone can pursue their different interests so you
do get stuff from like, "I'm in the first for the football team", to...you have the
Harry Potter Quidditch Society, and you have someone running round in a morph suit who
pretends he's the snitch and crazy things like that, so yeah we have everything and
anything, and if it doesn't exist then we'll help you set it up and you can pursue what
you love.
During the first week we have our Week One and it's one of the biggest and best in the
country. We held events that catered for over 20,000 people over different nights, and it
wasn't just like the stereotypical, "Uni going out and stuff!", it was like we had hypnotists,
magicians, comedians, movie nights, we had everything and we really cater for everyone
and it's all about inclusivity and making people feel welcome, that's what our Freshers'
Week is about. We also have a Freshers' Fair, which is 206 clubs and societies, 76 sports
clubs and you come and sign up to all the cool things you want to do, start your uni
life and have a great time.
SUs are notoriously a campaign machine, we're there to make change and to really help people
so we have everything from different networks, so if you're an international student, a mature
student, postgrad, we have everything and we try and listen to what students have to
say and then go and change them for the better so yeah, we run tonnes of campaigns.
My highlight of being the president of the Students' Union so far has to be the Fresher's
Address. I got to stand in front of 8,000 people and deliver this speech, which luckily
went down really well, even though I had the Lion King in it and yeah it was good, and
I really enjoyed it and that's definitely the highlight so far.
