Hey Friends! Mike here. And today I'm gonna show you a trick I use to give my snare drum
more depth...depth! Screw it, I'm Swedish. I can not pronounce
that word!
Anyway, check this out!
Alright, so this is a track I'm working on right now. And the drums consists of a kick
and a snare, hihats, claps and a crash cymbal. Ok, so the beat sounds like this.
Did you hear that extra depth in the snare drum?
Let me play just the drums so you can hear what I mean.
Alright, so this is the snare drum channel. And I've put a pulveriser on it to give it
more punch, and make it a bit more dirty. But the depth you hear is actually this reverb
here.
And I've put it here as an insert effect instead of a send effect in the mixer, cause it gives
me more control of the sound.
So what I want is to add depth to the sound without having that whooshy decay.
And let me show you what I mean by that. If we add another reverb here, and bypass this.
And just choose a setting here. Listen to the drums now.
Just a big messy decay there. And sometimes you want the big reverb decay, for example
in orchestral sounds or perhaps rock ballads or something. But in most electronic genres
you want more punch in the snare.
And we have no reverb at all on the snare drum it will be even more punchy and defined,
but it will lack that depth that I want. Listen to how this sounds without reverb.
Alright, now let me show you how to add that depth. Let's delete this one first. And as
you can see I have chosen a plate setting on the reverb. I have also added a predelay.
Quite a lot actually, 89ms here. This will keep the reverb away from the attack of the
snare drum sound. But the important effect of this is the gate, here. The gate turns
down the reverb completely as it hits a certain threshold. And this release time defines how
fast the reverb will be turned down. So if turn this on again and loop the beat I can
show you what this does.
You can also experiment with the attack and the threshold level. And that's it! That's
how you can add depth with a gated reverb on a snare drum.
