In 1994, fans of fighting games were treated to two very different movies based on Capcom’s legendary fighting game franchise, and Andrew Rivera is here to see how they stack up to each other. » Subscribe to NowThis Nerd: ****** The Street Fighter movie, based on the legendary series of fighting games from Capcom, is one of the most infamous movies based on video games. Yet the same year the live action Street Fighter 1994 came out, Japanese audiences were treated to the Street Fighter anime: Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. Based on Street Fighter 2, the Street Fighter anime starred the real versions of Ryu, Ken, Guile, M. Bison, Chun Li and more, while the live action Street Fighter movie was doomed from the start. From the first Street Fighter trailer, we knew there would be signs of trouble when Guile was cast with Jean Claude Van Damme. JCVD was an odd choice to play the all-American soldier, but there was at least one point of perfect casting with Raul Julia as Bison. In the analysis of our video essay, we explore why the animated film works so much better as cinema, and how animation might be the best way to translate games and the intensity of videogame gaming to the screen, which is the mission of our show Cut Scene. From the very first Street Fighter game, to SF2 and the legacy leading all the way up to Street Fighter 5 or Street Fighter V, the impact of Street Fighter is more than any single critique or review could imply. The future of the franchise outside of games is up in the air, but judging from the live action Street Fighter movie, the bar won’t be high to clear. #streetfighter #streetfightermovie #capcom #anime #videogames #gaming Get more from NowThis Nerd: » Like Us: ****** » Tweet Us: ****** » Follow Us: ****** Get more from NowThis News: » Subscribe to NowThis: ****** » Like us on Facebook: ****** » Tweet us on Twitter: ****** » Follow us on Instagram: ****** » Find us on Snapchat Discover: ****** NowThis Nerd is your one stop shop for everything from movies and TV to games and comics.
