Ready?
Yeah! Set!
Hello Everyone!
Welcome to what I am hoping is going to be a new regular segment called,
"Mimosas with Marty!"
*glasses clink*
As you may have guessed, this is Marty.
Marty and I have been friends a long time and we have
a lot of interests that are similar and yet
very different perspectives on certain geeky topics.
Ah, so we thought that we'd get together and share some of those perspectives with you.
See what you think!
Today as just sort of a little intro to
"Mimosas with Marty" we're going to be starting with
the Marvel's Captain America: Civil War trailer.
Now I'd like to,
pre-empt this by saying, typically,
I do not watch trailers.
I'm of the personal view where I try and
ignore everything that's coming out pertaining
to a movie, so I can go in with as
'fresh' a perspective as possible.
So, this will be sort of the first time
I'm really seeing anything for civil war, actually.
Aside from, what I see in my uh,
newsfeed scroll.
Now this is the, the set for people
who are keeping score at home and watch a lot of trailers
This is the trailer where
a certain web slinger is first presented
So if you want to put it into a historical context
there have been a lot of reactions to that.
And so, thought this would be a good
opportunity to get a reaction from Rogue
ON something that's...ah...
caused some waves
some people meh,
some people feel very strongly about it. Ah,
so yeah!
Marty: Shall we roll? Rogue: We shall!
Let us begin!
*Civil War Trailer opening music*
Oh Captain America... such a boy scout!
Look at what you've done!
Rogue whispering: It's all your fault!
Trailer: Captain, people are afraid!
Rogue: You keep breaking everything.
Marty laughs.
*sounds of Iron Man's power up*
Trailer: Whatever form that takes, I'm game.
Tony Stark: Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth
Marty laughs Rogue: YUP!
Yessss!!!
Black Panther! Omigod!
Yes!
Still disappointed that it's not Terrence Howard
Black Widow on TV: I'm not the one who has to watch my back.
But you are the one that needs to dye your hair red again
Trailer: You just started a war!
Soo exciting for Panther!
Oh yeah?!
Get me some Scarlet Witch in there!
Trailer: Stay down! Final Warning.
Trailer: Alright, I'm out of patience
Trailer: Underoos!
Spiderman: "Hey Everyone!"
Cute. Pretty much exactly what I expected.
Marty laughs.
I mean, to be honest, like I said
I hadn't really seen the trailer yet but I 'd seen stuff
scrolling my nos- in my newsfeed I had seen
that one shot of sorta him, crouched there
with the shield. Pretty much assumed something like that had happened
Right
I can't say I'm really surprised.
My actual biggest take away from that was -
BLACK PANTHER!
Marty: Yeah, that's fair.
Rogue: I'm SO excited for Black Panther! Um...
Marty: I'm kinda upset, cause they teased the like
Marty: Captain Marvel would be in this movie
Marty: Way back when and then like... Rogue: I think your forgetting Marty: ...took her out
Rogue: There's a really important thing about that
Rogue (mock-whispering): She's got a ***!
Marty: Ahhh yes. Rogue: So...
Rogue: We're probably gonna... yeah you know... I mean
Rogue: We COULD but *trails off vocally* I don't know for me
Rogue: one of the biggest things also you see that moment where they're all kind of running
Rogue: into each other Marty: Right. Rogue: I'm sure you've seen this meme
Rogue: and of course I'll probably find this meme and place it right here
Rogue: when I get to finding it.
Rogue: Where there is basically
Rogue: Y'know the movie expectation of Civil War
Rogue: and you have like the ten heroes running at each other.
Rogue: and then like comic book expectation Marty: Right, right!
Rogue: With the actual Civil War poster with the sides drawn.
Rogue: Um... it looks like pretty much what I expected.
Rogue: I can't say there is anything shocking or surprising about that.
Rogue: I'm not really sure why theres waves...
Rogue: about Spiderman, that had been a rumour
Rogue: for quite some time if I'm not mistaken Marty: Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Marty: No they established it, but I mean it's just the
Marty: first look, ahh...
Marty: And I mean it's interesting to, because people are, as they do,
Marty: reacting to the fashion
Rogue: Omigod! His suit is slightly different!
Marty: Yeah exactly Rogue *mock gasp* Marty: It's also like it's a throwback
Marty: And it's the first time the eyes have changed.
Marty: ...on a suit.
Marty: So, I don't know. I mean what do I know about superhero fashion?
Rogue: Well no! I'm sure you know quite a bit about superhero fashion.
Marty: It will be our ongoing 'Superhero Fashion Segment'
Marty: That's a good, that's a good intersection right?!
Rogue: Yeah, I think so. Marty: Cause it's like... all the Rogues you cosplay.
Marty: That's, that's fashion and character
Marty: intersecting! Rogue: No, and I mean
Rogue: Don't get me wrong, I've been the first person to complain about superhero fashion.
Rogue: In television or movies. Um, most notably
Rogue: Recently, The Flash
Rogue: They revealed Killer Frost Marty: Okay
Rogue: And I was severely disappointed with the look at that
Rogue: And a lot of people were kind of coming back at me saying,
Rogue: "Well you can't really expect, y'know the DC
Injustice version, where it's all like
Rogue: corset and high cut, super scandalous.
Rogue: Which I completely agree with. In a show
Rogue: Like Flash or Arrow, that wouldn't
Rogue: fit the mould. They've been more, y'know
Rogue: leatherbound and what have you. But...
Rogue: Her name is Killer Frost. Not a single like
Rogue: dabble of frost or like, glitter
Rogue: or just.... Marty: I haven't seen the images
Marty: It's just like in a black trench coat? Rogue: Pretty...uh, like
Rogue: More or less. Hang on. Let me pull this image up for you here Marty: Okay.
Rogue: uhh.... Marty: So it looks like a lot of
Marty: Sort of,
Marty: Black Canary meets Rogue: Like it's, it's literally
Rogue: like a slightly blue version of Black Canary
Rogue: and to be honest, even this photo that we have right here
Rogue: and we'll get this photo up here for you folks so you can see what we are referencing, Marty: Oh there it is!
Rogue: In this photo right here
Rogue: It's actually a lot more blue than what you see in the show.
Rogue: and she's typically got this coat over it
Rogue: and I mean, if you've watched Flash or Arrow
Rogue: The lighting is not exactly what it's known for.
Marty: Right. Rogue: So you don't really even get to see any of the
Rogue: mild detail you are getting a chance to see, sort of here, where its blown up.
Rogue: but yeah, it's just one of those like
Rogue *lower voice*: Where's, where's the frost?
Rogue: Where's the frost?
Rogue: *regular volume again* So yes! I've been the first person to complain about a costume.
Rogue: and I get it. But, I don't..
Rogue: I don't know maybe it's cause I'm not that hard core a Spidey fan
Rogue: that I'm not really affected.
Marty: Yeah, and I think it's just like Spiderman's always been the
Marty: key cornerstone franchise
Marty: for, well I mean that's what really started
Marty: the Marvel movies going. Rogue: Yeah but -
Marty: In some ways. So... Rogue: Are we-
Rogue: Are we really expecting like zero evolution
Rogue: as movies and stuff go forward? Marty: No! No! I mean
Marty: People are, theres a lot of interesting details.
Marty: That I've seen like some people drawing on, like what could be
Marty: possible, like, new
Marty: um, web fluid canisters on the suit and stuff Rogue: Okay
Marty: So people are already analyzing it a lot. But I don't know!
Marty: I mean it's a fun trailer. I - I was going to see the movie anyway.
Rogue: Yeah and I - same thing. Marty: And I have no attachment
Marty: I have no attachment to, uh, the Civil War comic book story line.
Marty: Which obviously has nothing to do with this other than the name
Rogue: Pretty much (laughs) Marty: Some people have just been upset
Marty: about it not being
Marty: THAT Civil War Rogue: And to be honest
Marty: And they - the conversation is over.
Rogue: Exactly. It's period. And I completely get that perspective
Rogue: Personally, for me, that was how I really felt wit the original X-Men trilogy
Rogue: I feel like when you're a comic fan and you are a huge fan of these franchises
Rogue: Sometimes you either have to be able to separate yourself
Rogue: In order to go see something and try and enjoy it.
Rogue: because you know, it's NOT going to be the same thing
Marty: Right. Rogue: So if you want to
Rogue: Like if you're going to go in with a perspective expecting
Rogue: what you got in the comic book that's never going to happen
Rogue: So you can either go in and be upset about it.
Rogue: Full well knowing that that's whats going to happen Marty: Right,
Rogue: and basically set up your own ending
Rogue: or you can try and disconnect as much as possible
Rogue: and enjoy it for what it is.
Rogue: I tried to enjoy the original X-men trilogy
Rogue: for what it is, but I'm sure as many people
Rogue: can guess, for various reasons (Marty laughs)
Rogue: It's not exactly a favourite of mine.
Rogue: and I can guarantee that, that will probably happen with Civil War
Rogue: and a lot of major Civil War fans.
Marty: I mean, but yeah -
Marty: There's a lot of things to happy about: Black Panther, obvs!
Rogue: BLACK PANTHER!
Marty: I mean, that shot of Ant-Man on uh,
Marty: Hawkeye's arrow, pretty cool!
Rogue: Yeah pretty nifty! Marty: And just, just
Marty: I mean just having Captain American and Iron Man wailing on each other
Rogue: Yeah and I like, I like how were finally
Rogue: Kind of getting to this point where
Rogue: ...it's bothered me personally
Rogue: Cause I feel like Marvel was perfectly
Rogue: set up for this in the long run. With things
Rogue: Like X-Men and the way that they had written
Rogue: a lot of their comics but yet somehow
Rogue: they didn't pick up the memo before DC did
Rogue: with Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow.
Rogue: Where, like, you can have these separate worlds
Rogue: where we're following, y'know, these core characters
Rogue: but these characters can all play within each others worlds.
Rogue: And you can have these one offs and moments.
Rogue: So I feel like Civil War is FINALLY
Rogue: We're finally getting to that point where it's, 'okay we're gonna pull in Ant-Man and Scarlet Witch
Rogue: and Black Panther and all these people.
Rogue: At the same time as excited as I am for that
Rogue: Because it's a movie and not a TV series
Rogue: There's less time. Marty: Right
Rogue: And that many exciting people on a screen
Rogue: at any one time
Rogue: means actual plot lines, actual story line
Rogue: Actual meat dialogue
Rogue: as opposed to zi-y'know zingy one liners.
Rogue: I think we might be looking at a little bit less in the uh
Marty: story? Rogue: Yeah story and plot development.
Rogue: which, I mean again, its Civil War
Rogue: You're coming in for action and big explosions and all that. Marty: Right.
Rogue: BUT I just hope it's not too divided
Marty: Right. Rogue: By having this many characters.
Marty: Yeah, and I mean the opportunity will be there
Marty: for story, hopefully, (hopefully!)
Rogue: In like, the Defenders Netflix series
Rogue: For sure.
Marty: After everybody's had their own one off series
Marty: then come together and everybody's got a rich back story
Marty: AND they're gonna have whatever 13 episode arc
Marty: Again, sort of telling the story
Marty: Four heroes.
Marty: Like, four second-string heroes
Rogue: Yeah, Marty: I'm stoked about that.
Rogue: Speaking of Netflix Marty: Yes...
Rogue: How excited are you for Luke Cage?
Marty: I'm pretty excite- I mean
Marty: I've JUST started watching Jessica Jones
Rogue: Oh okay! Marty: So Yeah Rogue: See I'm done Jessica Jones.
Marty: Yeah, I'm- Rogue: Where are you? Where are you? How far?
Marty: uhh... almost half, almost half, almost half!
Marty: and then yeah - Rogue: Did you- have you, have you seen
Rogue: the nod to the original suit yet? Marty: No!
Marty: No I haven't. Looking forward to that. Rogue b: You'll get there. It's fun!
Marty: Yeah, no I'm excited about like, Daredevil!
Marty: Another season of Daredevil. Punisher! That-
Marty: Really curious how that's gonna play out.
Rogue: I don't know how I feel about it. Marty: I'm really curious.
Marty: And that is the thing, that is my general attitude,
Marty: Curiosity!
Rogue: Yeah I don't - I don't wanna... I don't want to set myself
Rogue: to be excited or not excited Marty: That's fair.
Marty: What did you think of the first season of Daredevil?
Rogue: I really loved Daredevil. What I loved most about Daredevil is
Rogue: that, I went in it rooting for Daredevil
Rogue: and I came out of it on King Pin's side. And was like-
Marty: Interesting!
Rogue: Wait, what happened?! (Marty laughs)
Rogue: Hang on a sec- don't, aren't I a hero?
Rogue: Don't I like the good guy? Um...
Rogue: No I was really
Rogue: really impressed with the way they did King Pin
Rogue: And the way they made him such a
Rogue: a vicious character, a strong character
Rogue: but they really did also play on your heartstrings.
Rogue: They did give you more back story
Rogue: and he wasn't just this giant hulking
Rogue: white guy in a white coat. Like you had
Rogue: some emotion behind him and the reason why he's doing what he does
Rogue: um... Marty: Also white coats are the worst.
Rogue: Well yeah *scoffs* you can never keep that clean Marty: That's a...(laughs)
Rogue: Blood?! That doesn't come out at all.
Rogue: Just... *mock rage noise*
Rogue: um... but no I really enjoyed Daredevil
Rogue: But if I'm being honest, I think I enjoy Jessica Jones more.
Rogue: Um
Rogue: Daredevil excited me as an opportunity to have a
Rogue: blind character. I, as you know
Rogue: a huge advocate in, um, Marty: Right, right
Rogue: many areas of life, I like having more diversity on the screen.
Rogue: That being said, it would have been nice if they an actual
Rogue: blind actor playing him, but,
Rogue: Whatever neither here nor there
Rogue: I enjoyed the series. I really enjoyed King Pin.
Rogue: I felt King Pin sort of stole the show
Rogue: in the way that Dustin Hoffman stole the show from Robin Williams in Hook
Marty: Interesting. Rogue: King Pin stole the show from Daredevil.
Rogue: In Daredevil for me. So that was my experience of it.
Rogue: But Jessica Jones!
Rogue: That was like, Luke Cage stole that show too! I just-
(Marty laughs) Rogue: I don't know I have a thing for the secondary characters!
Marty: Yeah, yeah, yeah no for sure.
Rogue: So yeah that's just some of our thoughts
Rogue: on some of the exciting superhero stuff that's coming up
Rogue: Both DC, Marvel, TV, Films.
Rogue: uh, as we move forward with our mimosas
Rogue: we may come up with more topics, uh,
Rogue: related to either conventions,
Rogue: cosplay, things that are currently happening in the scene.
