New Zealand, Indonesia, and Chile shaken by earthquakes. Early on Monday, July 12, the
Hawke’s Bay region on the east coast of North Island, New Zealand was rattled by a
5.3-magnitude temblor with tremors that were widely felt around Gisborne and Hawke’s
Bay. Later that day, Indonesia’s Lampung province in South Sumatra was struck by a
magnitude-5.3 quake, which was soon followed by another of the same magnitude in North
Maluku province. In addition, West Nusa Tenggara province was hit by a 5.1-magnitude temblor,
63 kilometers southeast of Raba. On Wednesday morning in the Latin American country of Chile,
a strong magnitude-6.5 earthquake occurred 55 kilometers southeast of Lebu in the Bío-Bío
region. Fortunately, none of these events caused significant damage or casualties.
As we thank the Providence for the quake-stricken people’s safety, we pray that such disturbing
events may soon be a thing of the past with our gentler ways that help stabilize the ecosphere
