What we're doing here today is working on a
transect line, which in our case
is two 50 metre tapes rolled out
You might be wondering, what
does this do for us? Well it gives us
a snapshot that we can use as we're going along
identifying species, to see
what species we have down on the
line. As we go along, we take
our counts, of what species we have, so we might
have two of one species, three of another
and all these add up
over time as get along the transect line
to give us a picture of what species are here.
Working on the transect line, it gives us a good picture
of species that occur, per unit area.
Which you just can't sample if you're wondering
willy-nilly around a reef.
So over the next four years, we plan to sample
approximately 120 more sites
to get an idea of the speices abundance
and general biodiversity of the
Kimberley region as a whole.
