if you spent any time in the netherlands even just one night in the hotel
you're sure to see this traditional Dutch staple on the breakfast table
Hagelslag
nope it's not haagel slaag
it's hagelslag
hagelslag
hagel means hail in dutch
hagelslag is a hail storm
they are eaten on bread with butter - the butter helps them to stick
they are like little sprinkles although don't call them that in the netherlands
they're much more sophisticated than sprinkles
these are not
sprinkles
you can see from the variety offered in supermarkets just how serious they take
their hagelslag
there is usually half an aisle devoted to it all the different kinds of varieties
so it's really great that you know a little bit more about what hagelslag is
but what you really want to know and why you are really watching this video is how do
they taste
I'll sacrifice myself
like as if this is really the first piece I'm eating today
let's just see how they taste
this is actually really good
the crunchiness of the hagelslag with the softness of the bread
it's actually really yummy
its kind of like licorice on bread
the white ones - of course the other ones have different flavors
different chocolates and different colors
but this was really good
this little guy sure likes his
he's crazy about hagelslag
while on the topic of sugary things the dutch like to put on bread
i thought this would be a great time to introduce you to muisjes
or translated mice
no not that kind
these are actually little anise seeds covered in a sugar-coating
they come in pink and blue
so why would they come in these colors
well it's a tradition in the netherlands when a child is born at the family has
guests over and they serve these
pink for the girls and blue for boys
why are they called muisjes
well if you look really close you can see a little tail sticking out
of the seed
they are a little bit messy eat
but they taste really nice
just a bit too crunchy for my liking
so on that note
I'll end the episode here
and give my dentist a quick call
as always thanks for watching don't forget to subscribe to our youtube
