Oissuuuu!
- Whadduppp! - Hey guys!
- Today we're gonna talk a bit about fashion in the UK and Japan!
So this is just my opinion, but Europeans seem to have a reputation of
being very stylish and fashionable, almost like everybody is a model.
Now that I'm actually living in the UK and am in interaction with Europeans every day,
it got me thinking about how this preconception actually fairs in reality.
Also, what is the foreign view of Japanese fashion, and how does this compare to reality?
We're gonna talk a little bit about that!
- I think the first main difference we realised is brands, like high fashion brands. I think
in the UK, nobody really wears brands at all, and if you spend a lot of money on clothes
or buy a really expensive designer bag, often people are kind of like "omg, why did you
waste your money on that?" -- rather than being impressed, they're all about saving
money and being savvy, and that's why brands like Primark and H&M are really popular.
- Definitely. I think that the people who buy all the brands are Japanese, Chinese or
Korean mainly; it's more an Asian thing. - Yeah, a thing I noticed a lot when I went
to Japan was that everybody has designer purses, designer brand stuff.
- Yup, a lot of people have brand products in Japan. I mean, some say that people who
buy brand things are the people who have the least self-confidence, but I dunno...for Asians,
it's kind of like we admire Westerners a lot, so we use brands to get closer to that...?
I dunno! - Hmmm...but yeah, there's definitely a difference
between the amount of people that have designer brand stuff here compared to in Japan, and
the kind of focus that fashion has. So that's quite interesting.
- After that, style is also different right. - Ah yeah yeah, like in the UK, the 'vintage'
style is quite popular -- like shopping in vintage shops and wearing the big oversized
denim jackets and stuff like that. It's quite a rough and boyish style, but I don't really
see that a lot in Japan. Especially for girls... - Definitely...most Japanese girls dress quite girly.
- Yeah, really cute and more feminine.
- There's Shibuya 109 and stores like that. Guys also dress differently I think. In the UK,
a lot of guys wear super skinny jeans and those t-shirts with roll-up sleeves --
you don't see that a lot in Japan. - I think all guys here have a kind of set
code -- they just put on the clothes and that's it, they just wear them. They're not really
interested in fashion...in fact, I think boys here are brought up to dislike fashion, and
if you're interested in shopping and fashion as a man in the UK, it's taken negatively
sometimes and it's seen as girly, which is a real shame I think.
- Hmm...I don't think it's the same in Japan -- if a guy is stylish, that's just cool,
it doesn't have any kind of negative meaning. - Yeah! Guys can just be interested in fashion
-- it doesn't have to mean anything. I mean, I think it's just a different way of expressing
yourself creatively... - Yeah...although from my standpoint, the
guys that you talk about who act like they aren't interested in fashion (or just genuinely
don't care about it), I think they look pretty cool! The skinny jeans and rolled up t-shirts
I was talking about, I know that's kind of the typical lazy university student style here,
but I think it's cooler than the stuff people wear in Japan -- maybe that's just
because I was brought up in Japan though, lol.
- Yeah...I suppose it's not UN-fashionable, the guys here. But they certainly don't go
out of their way to follow all the latest trends and stuff, I think guys just tend to
if they see something in the shop that's on the model, they'll just buy it without putting
a second thought into it. Anyway! Leading on from that, we were going to talk a bit
about the magazines and stuff that we both look at, because we both love fashion
(if you hadn't already realised from our other videos...!)
- Do you have any good sources? - I love Elle! It's always ahead of the trends
-- I'd say it's a younger version of Vogue, so that's really good. But if you're looking
for something more high street / less brand focused, then Grazia is also a really good
British magazine which has celebrity gossip and stuff in it as well. It has really good
fashion in there. They often do money-off vouchers for places like Whistles (YAY),
so that's really good. And apart from that, I get a lot of my influence from
Instagram! So I follow people, like my favourite one is Camille (hope I'm saying her name right!)
from 'Camille over the rainbow'.com -- she's a French-British blogger and I think
she's head buyer for Mango or something now! I'll link her Instagram down below, it's really good.
But yeah, what about you?
- Me...yeah if it's Japanese magazines, SENSE is pretty good. - Yeah, it's really cool.
- The clothes and stuff in it are all pretty expensive and I can't really afford them,
but I just like reading it for the ideas. After that, I use Instagram, like following
my friends' friends or scrolling through links from celebrities and whatever - just clicking
through and finding inspiration from cool people.
- Yeah I think that's the main idea, look at higher brand and catwalk stuff for inspiration,
and then use it in your own every day fashion -- that's what we try to do...so yeah...
- That's probably about it isn't it? - Yeah!:)
- Well until next time, BYE BYEEEEE!
