Alright, we are live here. I'm Amanda Blackwell sitting with BYU softball player Carly Duckworth
and first of all Carly, how's the summer going?
It's going really good.
Lots of fun, just you know, working out.
Practicing in the offseason, but t's
nice to have a little bit of downtime. And this is the first season that softball
is a WCC sport. How excited are you to be part of the WCC this year?
We are really excited you know I've been in a different conference all
three years I've been here at BYU so it's finally nice to have a home
call the WCC our home so that's great.
And BYU softball's been pretty dominant for our WCC viewers who may not know. You guys have
been to the post-season nine straight years
What's it been like to be part of this team? It's been so great, I mean we've been very
successful and so excited to make the NCAA Regional but we have goals
to go
to go farther and to push ourselves and see how far we can go. Tell us a little bit
about your academics at BYU. What are you majoring in? So I just
got accepted into the finance program
in the Marriott School so i'm really excited for that. I've got
about about two years of school
but I'm right now I'm just doing internships
to help prepare myself for that major and what not. Yeah, just really excited.
That's great. That's exciting.
Let's see. Growing up near the mountains, you must have done a lot of mountain sports
any skiing, snowboarding anything like that? Yes. I love to skiing. Love snow skiing.
Haven't really been able to go since I've gotten to college and high school was
kinda hard too because the coaches don't love you to go
skiing and just take that risk with injuries so i'm excited to start skiing
after after softball's done. Your dad played football at Utah State, right?
He did. Yeah.
What was that like as a kid, or not as a kid, but
obviously you probably weren't watching him then, but just hearing about his stories
and stuff while he was playing? It's really fun to talk to him, just
we'll talk about you know how hard the workouts are sometimes and
we'll joke about how our bodies are getting so old from all the weight
lifting and all that stuff that that we did and
I don't know it's fun to talk about just
talk with him about the competitive atmosphere
and just how you can handle different situations 'cause college sports
are mentally mentally draining and you have to be mentally tough and so I'll talk
to him a lot and he'll help me kind of
just take it into perspective. That's a great resource to have for you.
So I played softball for twelve years, so I know that there are a lot of cheers in
softball that
are a lot of fun to do. Do you have a favorite one? I think the best ones are the
ones that you just make up on-the-spot
like
uh...
I don't know, with Coco we came up with
one with her one
for her
and just 'cause her name is so
quick and easy to say and it's just fun making them up for each individual player
How does the one for Coco go?
uh... It goes
It goes. Coco Coco Coco Coco Coco Coco Coco Coco Coco
Co Co Co
I love that. That's awesome. I know, uh, they came up with one for me
because my last name's Duckworth
And they'll go quack
quack quack quack quack
I was going to ask you about that. The Mighty Ducks reference. Do you ever hear that?
Yep. All the time. What about pregame rituals or superstitions. Anything you have to do?
I've got too many superstitions. I don't even know where to start. You know it's kind of funny
I've got to put my right cleat on before my left cleat or
I've got to
uh... when I was in high school I used to always have to eat a quesadilla before
games
I couldn't go without that.
When you're not playing softball or studying what can you find the doing?
What do you like to do with your free time?
I love playing the guitar
lately I've been really trying to get into it. I took a guitar class at
BYU
couple semesters ago and absolutely
loved it, so you know, I've been trying to work on those Kenny Chesney and Taylor Swift songs. All my
country songs but I actually learned to play my walkup song on the guitar so that
was pretty exciting. What's your walkup song? It's Radioactive.
Awesome. Yeah.
Is there another song that you've just mastered? That you feel like you're really good at and
really like playing?
Probably Taylor Swift's "Sparks Fly".
I'd say that one. Awesome. Well thank you so much and good luck with this season this
year and have a great rest of your summer.
Thanks so much.
