We're gonna look at how to Seafoam a Mazda Miata.
You'll need two sixteen ounce cans of Seafoam Motor Treatment.
They cost about ten dollars on average.
You'll also need one spray can of
Seafoarm Deep Creep, which runs about ten dollars also.
You'll spray it directly into your throttle body.
The first thing you need to do is warm your Miata up to operating temperature,
which I've already done in this step.
Once you've got the Miata warmed up,
go to the gas station
and dump one entire sixteen ounce can of Seafoam directly into your gas tank,
and follow that up by topping off your gas tank.
This will give the the Seafoam and the fresh gas the opportunity to mix entirely.
You'll need to know which intake on the motor to use
in order to get the Seafoam into the intake,
and I'm going to point that area out to you right now.
It is this one right here. This is the one that is specifically mentioned in the technical service bulletin.
It's this one right there, that's the one.
If you're doing this as a one person job, like I am,
just take and put a handle on the gas pedal and push it forward with the seat - anything that will help keep the pedal depressed.
You want to keep the revs around maybe two thousand, twenty two fifty, something like that.
(Sound of motor running) So what I've done is I've split that Seafoam up about 50/50. This is a 16.9 ounce bottle of what was Diet Coke.
The Seafoam is sixteen ounces, so this is about one half of that Seafoam.
So I'll put about half of it here, and the other half is gonna go in the crankcase.
You want to control the flow of Seafoam into the motor.
What I'm going to do is I'm going to hand pinch off the hose I attached to the intake so I can control the flow of the Seafoam.
It will start to slow the revs of the motor down, so the trick is if it feels like it's gonna stall the motor, let the Seafoam back off.
(Sound of motor running and the revs slowing down as Seafoam is added.)
OK, so we're gonna pinch the hose, put it in the bottle, and gently let off.
OK, so adding that Seafoam in, pinch off the hose, and put it in the bottle.
You'll have delicate hand control this way over how much Seafoam goes in.
If it starts to stall, let up on the Seafoam a little bit and it'll come right back.
You can already see the smoke coming out of the tailpipe as we're burning carbon off - that's a good thing.
Now remember, it is going to want to stall the motor because we're feeding petroleum in instead of fuel, so that's (the stalling's) normal.
Remember to keep tight control of the Seafoam as it goes into the car.
When you get to this last little gulp of the Seafoam, you want it to go all the way in and stall the motor so it will stay on the motor.
Let it rev up good and high. We've just got that last little bit left, and let it fully drink it down until it stalls it out.
(Engine stalls.) That's perfect. Perfect job.
It's gonna sit on those piston heads and continue to burn carbon.
Our next step is you wanna pour the remaining eight ounces of the Seafoam in the crankcase before you start it back up.
The remaining eight ounces go directly in the crankcase.
Now, one step that a lot of Seafoamers overlook is spraying some of this Seafoam Deep Creep
directly into the throttle body.
What that'll do is that'll clean all that carbon that is built up in that area also out.
So all you have to do to remove the access to the intake to the throttle body
is take off this clamp right here
and pull this out.
Take the Deep Creep
and spray it all up in there.
Of course, try to angle it upward a little bit so you can spray the entire throttle body area.
We'll allow that to dry and we'll just reattach the air intake
to the throttle body.
OK, so I've let it sit for about an hour and 15 minutes, so I'm gonna start it up and we'll be ready for the smoke show.
(Sound of car starting, running rough.)
(Sound of revving the engine.)
Now remember, your car's going to be mad for a little bit because you just put the Seafoam in it.
You're blowing out the carbon that, in this case, the car's 16 years old.
When you take it for that spirited drive, by the time you get back we'll see that that carbon is gone, and that car's running smoothly and no longer smoking.
So, as you can see, the carbon's burned off, and the Seafoaming process is complete.
I'm back from my spirited drive and now I'm off to get the oil changed.
You don't want to drive more than 5-10 miles with the Seafoam in the crankcase.
Thanks so much for watching the video
and happy Seafoaming for your Miata.
OK, we're going to pinch on this. You really want to control the flow of the Seafoam because you don't want the motor to hydrolock.
If you pinch it open a little bit - (pause) that's exactly what I'm demonstrating here, that you can hydrolock or stall the motor.
You don't want to do that, you want to let it drink it (Seafoam) in nice and slow.
(Motor turns off) I stalled it.
Ugh.
(Motor cuts off again) Damn.
