We want to learn how to replace an old fret on a Persian Tar or Setar.
Let’s say this area needs repair.
We will see how to change the frets with the strings already on the instrument.
You can gently remove the strings that need replacement with a little tool.
But be careful not to scratch the instrument.
Simple tools can be used to remove the frets, like a razor, just be careful again not to scratch the instrument.
Then, if you think the rest of the frets in this area are fine, gently push them up,
and later on you can bring them back to their original spot.
When you purchase the fret it usually comes with one thick and one thin end as you can see.
As you start from top to bottom, you start from the thicker end and continue your way down to the thinner end.
Now I’ll try to find the middle of the fret which is suitable for the area that we are working on.
Pull a little out and measure it right on the top of the strings.
Put your thumb on one side and measure from the top of the Tar.
We have to know the amount of turns for each fret. If we were to put a fret on for note “Ti”, first we have to know the amount of turns for it.
This one is “DO”, which has 4 turns.
“Ti” has to be 4 turns too.
At the end, we will cover how many turns should be for each note.
Again, for “Ti” we measure 4 turns.
Measure 4 turns, not too tight and not too loose and give it some slack, then cut it.
Using a little bit of saliva, moisten the fret. Try it a few times from top to bottom.
When it is moistened it is ready to be used.
Now the fret is moistened and not as stiff. It is ready to be used.
Turn the instrument to this position.
You can be seated or you can be standing up while doing this.
We want to put the fret in this area on note "Ti". Later we can tune it for the accurate spot of the fret using a tuner.
We start from this top area holding it with our thumb, make a loop so it can easily go underneath the strings.
Pay attention to go under all six strings.
Pull it completely so you can feel the tightness with your fingers.
It’s important that the fret that goes under your thumb to be pulled upwards or to the left of the first fret.
The second turn should be turned to the left of the first turn.
Be careful so the fret doesn’t twist.
Pull the fret and check it with the other finger to make sure they are not falling on top of each other.
Repeat this. Make sure that the frets are next to each other. Hold it tight with your thumb.
pull the fret under 6 strings.
again check with your fingers to make sure the frets are not twisted. Continue to pull it tight.
We have reached the final step.
The same end of the fret that you were working with, take it up and pass it under all 4 frets.
pull it down and switch its place with the other end of the fret.
Take the first one down, and the second up and pull. This will make a hook.
Take the fret that is pointing down and pass it under the 4 frets again.
Once it is through, pull it down and make it tight. The knot is ready.
Make them neat and pull them back to their spot. Until fret is hard and tight.
To pull the frets down, you can use the tip of your fingers and put it in place.
Later, you can tune it with a tuner. Make sure it is neat, tight, and in place.
Clip the remaining fret strings with a nail clipper.
After a while the sharp ends will become smooth and it will not hurt your hand.
Now, we will see which notes have how many turns.
