Believe and You Shall See
The thriving energy of Taiwan, is what Liuli wish to capture since the beginning.
We believe by doing, accumulate experiences from failures, and give out all we can for each attempt, one day we will be able to use glass to describe the beauty of Taiwan that is in our eyes.
hand pick just the right size wax bead, to fill the gap formed by the burst of air bubbles. Recreate the feathers by sculpting, and smooth out all the trace with q-tips.
Picking the right wax beads with diameters less then 0.1 cm is really challenging for the eyes. Turning a green piece of wax into a colorful kingfish is truly difficult. - Master Wax Sculpture, Li Li Chang
Using the wax sculpture to create the cement mold
Inserting color glass paste
Yellow feathers around the eyes
It is extremely difficult to maintain the precise separation of colors, especially on the head where all the colors intertwine.
Coloring - body
The body of the kingfisher is a beautiful gradient of golds. It took months of experiment and our most seasoned artist to successfully reproduce this exquisite layering of feathers.
Filling - The head
Filling - The wings
The wings are compose of different blues, The artists use their brush work to precisely draw out each feathers.
It is impossible to see the inner section of the mold. This is where artists need to rely on their experience and touch to place right amount of paste at the right location
Filling require hours of concentrations. Failure rate is high even for our most thorough work. Even with perfect colors, due to the delicate nature of the Kingfisher's design, the piece can easily break in the finishing process.
Kiln form
Remove the cement cast
Cutting the excess and supporting structures
Polish the beak
12 steps, 12 challenges
Every mistake, require the work to start over
The colorful feathers of the Kingfisher turn out to be a great obstacle. It took a year, 3 different prototype, and more then 20 pilot runs to finalize the design.
Even more experiments are done and finally the artists are able to capture the vividness of the body feathers.
It took great deals of persistence
To break the limitation of Pâte de Verre
Capturing the vigorous life force of native Taiwan species
Believe, so we see Liuli's small steps of progression. Believe, so we are still at Taiwan, at our origin Tam Sui. Using Taiwan's native species, and their vigorous energy as our design elements, Defining "Believe and You Shall See"
Seeing the dream of Taiwan taking off
Believe and you shall see - Kingfisher
Seeing the courage of Taiwan
Auspicious Summit -Taiwan Sambar Deer
Seeing Taiwan's fortitude
The Power of Ascension - Yushan Juniper
Seeing the Love of Taiwan
This Lifetime -Lanyu Scops Owl
To capture the life force of these native species, each steps of the processes need to be precise and refine
For an artist to become a Master of one specific process require 3 to 5 years. To fully develop an artist require at least 10 years.
Every piece have it's character, every piece is unique. Every piece is precious and rare, that one can treasure for generations.
Believe, and we shall see each others Believe, and we shall see the future We believe in our-self, believe in Taiwan Believe in our imagination
