So a little while ago we did a video about Korean Animal Sounds
Guak Guak! Guak Guak!
GUl GUL GULG UGLGUGUKGGULMEOW
So today we want to talk about other Korean sounds.
Now, I'm a really big fan of Korean comics, they're called Manhwa
And sometimes when I'm reading them I can't figure out what the sound effects are.
So today we want to go over some Korean sound effects.
Simon, are you ready? [I'm ready]
[cheesy sound effects for fighting]
I GOT MY GUN!
Oh oh, I'm gonna lose.
Ok, so when you're driving your car, right,
and you see a fine honey, and you roll down your sexy window,
Ok, wait a second: if you're rolling down a window,
you're probably driving like a piece of crap car.
Anyhow, so say you're driving in your car, right,
and you want to honk at someone, you go HONK HONK HONK HONK.
But in Korea it's different. You ready? I'm driving around like this
and I go like this *** *** *** BAAAAaaaaaaaang.
It's actually kind of accurate, because the horns in Korea, like
trail out, so if you honk your horn for a long time it goes like this.
BAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaan
So, an easy one: if you're sneezing you go ACHOO
Oh, mine's much better. A CHWEE!
That is infinitely cuter. A CHWEE!
Do you have to do it in that voice also?
Like, do grown men go "Hello there baby. A TWEE!"
So say you gotta cough, what are you gonna do?
You're gonna…cough? cough cough. Is there any other sound effect for it?
No I guess it's like, you know, there'll be a star for it.
like COUGH and that's it, right?
I guess.
Anyways, Korea's got a fresh new style: COLOCK COLOCK!
GOLLUM GOLLUM!
Yeah it does sound like Gollum.
So if you're about to throw up you go
….Barf?
HAHAHAHAH!
Is that the word? Just barf?
Barf I guess! [I guess it's barf]
Or baaaaaaarf [bleeeehhhhh]
Bleeeeh YEAH! Bleh! You can go bleb.
Ok, Korea's got a really accurate one.
You ready?
OO WECK!
Isn't that amazing? It's Oo-weck! Like that,
and it sounds like our dog barfing. Oo weck!
That's perfectly right. I don't want to think about of Spudgy barfing.
OO oo OOOOO ooo,
Next, one of my favourite ones is sighing, so if you sigh you go:
ahhh…sigh.
And in Korean it's "Ay hyoo"
Ay hyoo.
Isn't that awesome?!
Ay hyoo. Ay hyoo! Ah hyoo.
It's just so cutely pathetic. [isn't it?]
Ok so if you're shooting your gun you gotta say "*** ***!"
Hey!
You watch it missy! I got a gun [you just shot me!]
I'm a gangster!
Well, I'm a gamster and I got a Korean gun, ready?
*** *** *** *** *** *** ***!
That is so non-threatening.
*** means "bread" in Korean, so…
BREAD BREAD BREAD! BREAD BREAD BREAD!
Ok so next, if you're very surprised or shocked you say
Oh My God! OMG!
But Korea's got a better one down pat.
OMO!
!!! OMO!
and if you're very surprised, like, continuously surprised,
Like, OMOMOMOMO! OMOMOMO!
Ok, so Simon and I were walking once,
and we were going across the street,
and some girl shifted behind some person and was running,
but ricocheted off of Simon's chest,
LIKE A MAN!
And literally went like this WHOOPAA OMO!
And I laughed really hard [that's right!]
So whenever someone's talking for a really long time,
you can just say blablablablabla
But in Korean it's much cuter,
It's momomomomo
So when I actually, when I first came here
and I was teaching my students, I was trying to explain
like a fill-in-the-blank, so I said Bla bla bla
and everyone just looked at me like WTF?
And then I realized that I was saying a word they don't understand.
So we did some trading of understanding
and now I go MOMOMO.
Trading of Understanding?
That's right! Trademarked Martina 2011.
I will trade you my Level 3 Understanding for your Charizard card
That's right! Charizard's more powerful, though.
If for some reason you ever feel the need
to write a sound effect for a horse walking by,
HEY HEY! Lot's of Mangas have horses in them!
What kind of lame mangas do you read?
Samurai Mangas where people are fighting on horses (stupid)
Anyhow, horsies go clop clop clop clop clop
And Korean horses that are running go
Dal Ga Dag Dal Ga Dag Dal Ga Dag Dal Ga Dag
Donald Duck Donald Duck Donald Duck Donald Duck
Dal Ga….Dak
Dal ga dak?
Dal ga dak!
Are you sure? [yes]
Dal Ga Dag Dal Ga Dag Dal Ga Dag Dal Ga Dag Dal Ga Dag
I think that's pretty accurate, actually,
but try saying that quickly.
Dal Ga Dag Dal Ga Dag Dal Ga Dag
Have you ever been on a 14 hour flight from Toronto to Korea,
and you have a crying baby beside you for the entire plane?
Cuz we have!
If we had to write a subtitle for it,
it'd go WAA WAA WAA
Are you sure? It was more like
[accurate rendition of that freaking baby that wouldn't stop for the entire 14 hours of flying OMG worst flight EVAR!]
But if it was a Korean baby, it would have been like this:
Ong ong! Ong!
I don't think babies make the G sound.
ONG ONG ONG I don't even know.
Ong ong ong? [I feel like that one's really] ONG!
That sounds wrong
Next one's a really funny one, so if you ever have to write
a fart out, you usually write like PFFT
P F F T! P F F T!
Or you might be like, FAAAART
FAAAART! No you don't write FART!
SIFT! PFFT! P F F T
Ok ok, um, it's a much cuter one in Korea, ready?
BooooooOOOOOOOONG!
That's actually it,
like boong, but you can say like boong!
Or you can be, like a long one when someone
lifted their leg up and bit their lip down and were like
and squeaked one out,
Ok so next one: if you're eating, you usually go like,
munch munch, perhaps?
Just munch munch? I think we're missing out on something else.
Munch munch, crunch crunch,
Maybe like, slurp? Right? Like hhghghg crunch crunch.
You eat by slurping?
Like when you're talking about someone rude, yes,
That's how you eat!
Uhh, in Korea you have two options,
One is for the slurping version, that would be like, chob chob
So you're like CHOB CHOB CHOB CHOB CHOB
CHOB CHOB CHOB CHOB CHOB CHOB
But the cute version is the best thing ever!
OMG, NYAM NYAM NYAM!
NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM!
Well, just nyam nyam, but I'm saying it in a much cuter voice.
NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM.
That is pretty freaking adorable,
and you know what it sounds like? It sounds like the poptart cat.
NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM NYAM
Ok so next, if you have a thunderstorm outside,
by the cloud you'd probably write like GRRRRRR [What?]
For the thunder.
What kind of…what? That's like an angry cloud.
It is an…well, that's thunder!
We don't write GRRR for thunder!
Well what do you write for thunder?
Like…BOOM POW SMASH!
BOOM POW SMASH! I'm the Batman cloud!
Anyways, Korea says, uhhhhhh
Wait wait I remember this one, it's difficult.
OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG.
OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG!
So like, OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG.
OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG.
That kind of sounds accurate, [does it?]
OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG! OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG!
OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG.
Anyways, I think it's too long, personally [that's what she said]
I think OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG sounds like a [tiger] some kind of dance.
What do you mean tiger? Ohhhh, you live in Korea.
EUH REUH RANG!
So that's all the time we have for today,
I'm sure there are many more but we definitely can't go over them all,
and I'm really sorry about our pronunciation,
I'm worried that we didn't like, quite get them right.
Yeah, I think that we got a lot of them wrong maybe
I don't know, because usually I'm just reading them,
Right, so I don't really know what it sounds like,
umm, yeah
So if there's any that we missed out on,
please let us know but that's all we have for now.
OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG! OO ROO ROO GUANG GUANG!
GONG!
