Us Post Office Stopping Saturday Delivery to save $2 Billion

we learned today that the u_s_ postal service is going to cut saturday mail delivery to save two billion dollars per year they say that they are going to keep dispersing packages of six days a week package delivery has actually gone up for the u_s_ postal service but deregulation actually gone down a number of reasons for that obviously electronic means of communication or a big factor there package delivery up fourteen percent since twenty ten now the interesting thing here is and this is really unsettling for awhile now republicans have been talking about how the u_s_ postal service is not the type of of business that the government should be in and is that they need to get rid of it that it's losing money and when you just do a basic analysis of what's going on there so much matt misinformation going on here number one is just the fact of the situation in terms of the u_s_ postal service is an independent agency they receive note tax dollars for day-to-day operations from the government but they are subject to congressional control or why are they in so-called bankruptcy or losing money in the red it's actually not because of anything operational it's going on but because of that congressional control what am i talking about well because of the republican controlled congress of the bush cheney era the u_s_ postal service was forced since two thousand six finder future retiree health benefit so the american postal workers union says this mandate is the primary cause of the agency's financial crisis no other government it into your private company bears this burden which costs about five-and-a-half billion dollars annually so dei do understand what this is listed if you look a lot of people are missing this congressional oversight has dictated the u_s_ postal service must put into an account they must pay out into a sort of escrow type of situation not literally an escrow but into account the future retirement benefits that they will pay including to some u_s_ postal workers who have not yet even been hired by the postal service they need to pre fun that that would that would turn so many millions of of businesses would not be able to support that though there was a few with we went down to the local grocery co-op that's over here profitable running in the black making money everything's great if you said to them the next twenty years you need to put all of the salaries that you're gonna pay anybody who works here for the next twenty years right now into an account they go under they go under and and that but does that mean that it's an inefficient business in that it's not being run well no it's just an incredible a demand to be making and a lot of people the same people who are criticizing the financial standing of the u_s_ postal service seem to be ignoring the cause of that loss yeah now do we know when this actually get it went into effect two thousand six two thousand six ok i mean things have gone down for a closer postal service quite a bit since then and he's a possible on paper innate sense in two thousand six uh... i don't know that idon't know what the logic was bad obviously it's completely absurd now yeah yeah and the other thing we have to think about israel saying the u_s_ postal service just needs to go away the u_s_ postal service was was that beating of efficiency and really of kind of american innovation right i mean that the the while you you said at this organization which is going to deliver six days a week is going to deliver mail all across the country that for for the for the cost of one stampin that cost has changed over time you just put a letter in the mail and anywhere in the country it just shows up there it's a run well it works it it uh... employees so many people this lead time to me seems to have become one of the bogeyman of the republican party yet i like the big bird of p_b_s_ mentioned during the debates i i don't know i mean there if there is something to be said for the fact that they would be losing money anyway uh... most of this is due to the congressional action that you're talking about but not all that um... there is a certain uh... issue here with new technologies and competing companies so but certainly um... you would need to be looked at no matter what whose but the idea that now they would need to stop delivering on saturdays because of a real um... issue in the market is obviously falls no question about it casey and i think that's that that's the main point here uh... we've got some great stuff going on with the show's i got a couple of
