The way we walk
reveals who we are.
Biometric techniques
enable to recognize people
for their way of walking.
A breakthrough with important applications
in security, leisure or medicine.
Everyone has a unique way of walking
and we can recognize familiar people
for their way of walking.
Some studies show
that observing the movement
of the silhouette of a person
we can identify known persons.
We are currently developing methods
that enable biometric identification
of individuals by their gait.
With respect to other conventional sources,
as the face or fingerprints,
gait has advantages
as it doesn't require collaboration
of the person who is being observed;
it does not require proximity to the camera
or ideal lighting conditions.
-Research carried out by the Universitat Jaume I
advances in the application
of this innovative technology
in the field of security.
-We are working
on a video surveillance system
called "biometric re-identification".
It is a vision system
oriented to a public space
with zero knowledge
of the people who should be recognized.
When individuals appear,
they are characterized
and this information is stored
to re-identify them
in future appearances in that scenario.
Thus, according to the place and time,
multiple occurrences of the same person
could be considered suspicious
by a human operator
that would receive this information.
-Carrying out a demographic analysis,
improving the movements of characters
in video games,
developing medical prosthesis
or helping in the search for fugitives
are some of the many applications
that this new technology opens.
