My name is Brenda Johnston and I’m the SALS peer tutoring coordinator for Durham College. My main role in SALS is to recruit, hire and train upper year students to work with their fellow students as tutors.
Peer tutoring is a very reasonable service provided to students who are having difficulties. The upper level students from second and third year who have been successful scoring in the A range for instance would provide peer tutoring. The peer tutoring program at Durham College is very useful is helping students to succeed. Students can come in and apply for a tutor. We always have our tutors available by the third week of classes so they can get in fairly quickly.
Hearing from a student who has previously taken the course is very beneficial in terms of the learning process.
I came and asked for a peer tutor and my mark went from 50 to 90 in accounting so I’m very proud of myself for that and the tutor was wonderful
We have a wonderful success rate in our program and students can have access to tutoring up to two subjects per semester, they can have up to 15 hours of tutoring each of those two subjects and the cost to the student is only a $5 registration fee.
