If you're in pain or discomfort you want to be able to go and see someone who can effectively
and safely treat the problem. Maybe you've been told to go and see an osteopath or maybe
you've been looking into osteopathy as a profession but you don't quite know what is is or what
it can do for you.
Well in this short video I'm going to explain what an osteopath is and what they do and
how they can help you.
When I tell someone I'm an osteopath one of the first things they usually say is "Thats
bones isn't it?"
My answer is Well yes we deal with bones and "Osteo" does mean bone but we'll deal with
joints, muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons, visceral system and other systemic problems
as well.
Osteopaths effectively deal with things such as; Sports Injuries- muscle spasms. We can
deal with ligament problems, things like- ankle sprains. Tendon problems- repetitive
strain injury, golfer's elbow, tennis elbow, achilles tendonitis. Other problems, things
such as; headaches. Quite often a headache can be related to a problem with the neck
or the blood supply going to the brain, so we look at the function and try and work out
the cause of the problem. Some of the techniques that we use as osteopaths can be quite vast,
things such as general massage, osteopathic or deep tissue massage, mobilisations or joints;
trying to increase the range of motion, stretches; so trying to increase the range of motion
of the muscles which will affect the joints as well, manipulations; the things where you
get the cracks, acupuncture, taping- kinesio taping, and even lifestyle and nutrition advice.
So osteopaths can do a whole range of different treatment modalities. The treatment that an
osteopath will do on you will depend on your situation and what the osteopath thinks your
body can tolerate. An osteopath should never do a technique that you don't feel comfortable
with because if you don't feel comfortable with the technique ultimately you're going
to be quite tight and tense and you're not going to get the maximum benefit from that
technique.
