THE CITY OF OPPORTUNITIES ECOC PROGRAM 2012 VELENJE In the ECOC year everything will be marked by Pippi Longstocking. Barbara Pokorny, Director the Velenje Festival She will visit Velenje every month with interesting products for children. The main week of events will be from 15 to 23 September. There will be Pippi’s City right next to Velenje Lake. Pippi Longstocking Festival 15 September 2012–23 September 2012 Different venues in Velenje Velenje is growing and developing together with Pippi and its own production. At the Velenje Festival we are preparing a musical, Aladin, a dance, a puppet and an inter-media production. Hi! I’ll be waiting for you in Velenje in September! Yay! Stojan Špegl, Director of the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia The Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia is participating in the ECOC with two projects. One is the Laibach Kunst. Laibach Kunst 1 April 2012–31 May 2012 The Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia This is an exhibition that highlights life in a coal mining society in a modern way. One picture demonstrates all the kinds of coal in Slovenia. The other project will take place 160m below ground in a special concert room. Ligi Stage 1 May 2012–30 October 2012 Concerts 160 meters below ground! We will try to organize a concert about the sounds of underground. The concerts will be broadcast to the surface and the internet. The Kunigunda Festival of Young Cultures in its 15th year in 2012 will offer a varied program of youth alternative culture. Dimitrij Amon, Head of the Kunigunda Festival of Young Cultures Kunigunda Festival of Young Cultures 24 August 2012–1 September 2012 Different venues in Velenje Velenje will feature many different events in music, theatre as well as street art. We want to shift this alternative culture that takes place behind closed doors to the city and its unconventional locations. We will also be in some parks and have an art fashion show. 28th Summer cultural events 20 June 2012–15 August 2012 Different venues in Velenje Matjaž Šalej, Head of the Summer Cultural Events Velenje Velenje Festival and its Summer Cultural Events will feature various types of events, from children’s activities, music, theatre, dance. There will also be a few well-known cycles. The Prešmentane Citre Zither Festival, our open-air movie theatre, as well as events for children held regularly twice a week. Velenje International Festival of Embroidery 9, 10, 11 November 2012 Red Hall Marija Vrtačnik, President of the Universtiy for the Third Age Velenje The three-day festival of embroidery will demonstrate the arts and crafts of the women in Velenje, its surrounding, Slovenia and Europe. It’s a demonstration of knowledge and skill as well as cultural heritage that has been around for centuries. We want to enrich the festival with different experience and expertise, so we have invited Janez Bogataj to give a lecture on folklore and cultural heritage and share it with the embroidery experts, exhibitors, and visitors.
