Star Lord has an Ego the size of a planet.
This is the adventure and story review
of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. No spoilers, mostly.
So in our minds Guardians of the Galaxy Volume one is a perfect film, a five. It’s a film
that can be watched on repeat from younglings to prune people. My first viewing transported
me to my young very good-looking body where I watched ET for the first time. Where I travelled
at 88 miles and hour to the future to skate on a hover-board. The first Guardian flick,
had it all. Its escapism at it’s best.
So Star Lord and the gang had a lot to live up to in volume two. Firstly before we get
into the film. We know James Gunn and his team are super invested in the universe they
have created together. We had the opportunity to go to the London Gala Premiere. Where James
Gunn, Kurt Russell, Christ Pratt made an appearance. When Kurt Russell stepped out on stage Ruben
squealed like a little girl.
But by far the best bit of the pre-show with amazing lighting
effects and DJ had to be when Jon Baptist danced with kids at the front. They really
love what they do!
Anyway now that we are done with our gushing we’ll get into volume two. Volume two, starts
as shown in all the trailers with the team battling an inter-dimensional octopus thing.
Cue one of the greatest openings I’ve ever had the honour of seeing on screen. Without
giving anything away right from the get go the Guardian film is driven by an amazing
soundtrack
and spectacular opening sequence.
The Guardians have come to realize that Star Lords love of music, specially his mother’s
playlist on tapes is never going away. The 70’s themed music playlist, which is available
to buy now, we’ll leave a link below. Is by far one of the biggest driving forces of
volume two, more so than the first. The team seem pretty pre-occupied at times with Star
Lords music even at the most inopportune times.
There are in fact five factors that drive this film to near perfection in our opinion.
1. The 70’s music playlist.
2.) so many incredible one-liners that you will require
many viewings to catch them all.
3.) The underlying family trumps all story-arc which we will get to.
4.) the incredible visuals,
which of course you will get with a Guardians film.
5.) the phenomenal writing, which kind
of goes hand in hand with the one-liners but both need a point on there own.
So getting back into the film. We find ourselves just hanging out with the team as they try
to make some money fighting this inter-dimensional pink squad thing all of which is set to the
back drop of incredible visuals, one-liners and the 70’s soundtrack. But what this film
is about the at it’s core, is family.
Kurt Russell play’s Ego, a character who claims to be Star-Lords dad. And this is where
the family theme comes into play as the over-all arc. But where Star Lords daddy issues could
overbear the film James Gunn so cleverly brings every character to into Star Lord story. Creating
a sort embryonic family arc storyline with each of the team. He builds from the character
development of the first film to what they are now, a bickering very dysfunctional family.
But a family now less.
What you don’t have to be worried about at all is whether or not this film is just
a stop gap. It is not the link or bridge to take us into the Infinity wars storyline.
Which is what a lot of people where thinking would happen with this film and the upcoming
Thor Ragnorok. Now we can’t say just yet about Thor, but Guardians certainly isn’t
a stop gap.
James Gunn has seemingly been allowed to carry on his vision for the Guardians. This is a
day in the life of the Guardians. Where the audience is along for the ride. Ultimately
vol2 is the same as the first. Mr Gunn gives ample back story to each of his characters,
Drax, Gamora, Rocket and Star Lord. Even some of the not so main characters get back story
in amongst space explosions and witty lines. Michael Rooker who plays Yondu in the film
brought an emotional side to the story line that I didn’t see coming. In fact a scene
between him and Rocket is probably my favourite in the entire film if not both films
We should not have been surprised though that Yondu’s character was fleshed out so much
bearing in mind what great friends Mr Rooker and Mr Gunn actually are. And that’s what
we meant by a family arc. Mr Gunn has obviously taken great care in developing theses characters
and story lines for them.
In fact volume two doesn’t so much feel like a sequel but rather a continuation from
where we left off. As if it’s just another episode of Star Lord and his band of thieving
misfits. Cinematography can often over looked in films like this. But if like me lighting
flicks your switch. Then you’ll defiantly pick up on few scenes with ooo’s and ahhh’s,
especially with Yondu’s character.
So band are thrust together once more on a new adventure about discovery. Who is this
Ego, what does he want. Gamora deals with sister issues, Rocket deals with emotions
that doesn’t know how to handle. Drax is still trying deal with the loss of his family,
Star Lord, well he has Hoff sized issues. And let’s not forget Groot.
Groot sacrificed himself in episode to save the team from massive crash. Thankfully a
part of him survived. And now he is a little seedling. So with his powers severely limited
because of his size. Groot has to now try and keep up with the shenanigans’ that Guardians
get up to. Which is a lot. Basically the Guardians now a baby tree to look after. Where in some
films the child/baby can often be the thing that destroys the film, here it is the opposite.
Groot often steals the scenes from everyone else on camera. This is down to the visual
expertise of the team involved in the creation of character so lovable that even the bad
guys can’t harm him.
So will you enjoy this film as much as the first? Probably, it’s like a continuation
of the first. Unless you are going into film with scowl on you’re face wanting to hate
it. Honestly there is not much dislike. There’s just more of the same. Take the original Star
Wars trilogy. A new hope was awesome, but the empire strikes back is said to be the
best of the three because of where it’s and how it fits into the story arc as a whole.
Whether this Vol2 will be empire to Guardians is yet to be seen. We will just have to wait
for Vol3 but we suspect that this may be the case. The Guardians film has already been
talked about by many as this generations Star Wars. Or the Star Wars that we need.
James Gunn has also given us a film that stands on it’s own. No need to have watched any
others in the MCU . Just go along for the ride and witty banter and fantastic characters,
let your inner child out and enjoy the adventure. Oh and by the way if you like end credit scenes.
Then don’t get up. There are five! Yes you heard me, FIVE!!
If you can see it in a full cinema, do. We where surrounded by 4000 other people who
laughed and cried or laugh cried at the same time. The atmosphere was amazing. Worth seeing
it with many other humans or aliens if that’s what you prefer.
This brings us to the rating, after long contemplation, I’m giving it a five.
How about you Jema?
I give it a five
