Mats/Morgan Band - Ta Ned Trasan
Today's exercise
Yes, we heard Ta Ned Trasan, with Mats and Morgan Band. Nice.
We're going to do exercise, or you're going to do exercise and I'll listen.
Today we'll mimic snare hits on the kick drum.
I'll play a little, and then I'll explain what's going on.
This is how it goes.
What I'm doing is that I think of a pattern,
like one or two bars long pattern on the snare.
And, the hard hits one would hit with the right or left hand,
depending on whether you're right- or left-handed.
Those, you switch out with hits on the kick drum.
That often gets a little, hmm..
It won't keep up, it lags behind.
Yeah, it won't.
So this exercise is meant to eliminate that.
So, pedal hi-hat in quarter notes maybe.
Then think of any pattern you'd like.
There you added about ten years worth of practice for me, anyway.
What did you do there at the end?
It's a kind of drum roll.
It's good if one can do it, just..
It's simply put two hits on the snare and two hits on the kick.
Yeah, exactly.
One can do..
I can actually identify something from my rather short drum training, a flam!
Exactly, one-- two hits close to each other.
Then I switch out the first hit for..
And so on. But this is a good exercise.
Pedal hi-hat, play..
Well, the only rules that exist are
the hard hits are hit with one hand, right or left doesn't matter.
Later one would just switch that out and try to make it
not limp too much.
And that's it?
That's it.
Did you have more exercises?
Nope.
But you brought records?
Yep.
And then we have three as usual, recommendations.
It's what we usually do, and then we first have here
Univers Zero, difficult to pronounce.
Yes, a Belgian band which is pretty cool stuff.
Here's a record named Heat Wave.
What kind of music do they play?
There are no vocalists, at least.
Instrumental, as it's said. At least in this world.
Here's another record of theirs named Heresie.
Heresie. One can attempt to pronounce it in French, or whatever it is.
It's a Belgian band, but it might be that.
They've done quite a bit on that thing.
Univers Zero.
And then, this is also a hot tip;
Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo.
Brazil's wizard.
The record's named Brasil Universo.
He really does nice stuff I think.
A cool rhythm scientist.
I don't know what I should call him.
Don't want to put a label on him?
Yeah I'll skip that.
Just listen.
Fantastic record, really. Puts you in a good mood.
Before we end, Morgan will do his one handed snare roll.
