1999, this is a million years ago, Seth Godin said, "Ask people's permission to market to
them." If they ask for it, they'll read it, they'll engage with it. There are so many
fewer people that are gonna say, "This is spam! I didn't sign up for this! How'd I get
on this email list?" The trickery is not gonna work here because it damages your reputation
by making you look like a spammer - from "I Want My $28! Rockin' Email Marketing ROI"
as delivered at SXSWi 2013
Did everybody hear that? Chris tells us that it's not just one way. So, it might be marketing
but you better be ready to listen, too. There's some engagement to that. - from "Launching
Social Media for your Restaurant" as delivered to the JCCC class 2013
In those text words that you use, make sure that you don't say things like "free, free,
free ***" in all caps with 15 exclamation points. You're gonna have a hard time. Because
you look like spam, you have spammy content.
There's a portion of that list, industry says about 35%, that never opened or has not opened
in 13 months. If I can reach out to those people, re-engage maybe 10% of them and then
nuke the other 25,000 people that I cannot seem to re-engage on that list...
It's not just the television station talking to the audience anymore. People are talking
to each other. And we've proven that it can be just as loud, just as permeating...
Sending too much mail too fast to Yahoo! freaks Yahoo! out and they'll just decide, "Ooh,
no, you know what, I bet you're spam, I'm just not going to send any of your email."
[Email service providers] automatically handle all of your unsubscribes and complaints for
you.
Why isn't it free? Why didn't I just say social media is free? It doesn't cost anything, right?
Time! Duncan says it costs our time. How many of you have extra time? Oh good, so she's
going to do all of our social media for us. (laughter)
