My name's Trevor Nelson, I'm a DJ/Broadcaster/TV Presenter... type thing.
When I was about 19, I got asked to join a fledgling pirate radio station, called, Kiss
FM, and basically... that was the start.
To get into radio if I had to have 5 tips... Just getting in, any in. There's a guy called
Jez Whelam who's on Kiss FM... he wrote to me when I was on Kiss FM, years ago, and says,
'I'm a fan of this show, can I come in and hang out in the studio', and I said, 'yeah
fine', I said, 'what do you do?' He says, 'I'm an electrician'. He's still doing drive
time on Kiss FM to this very day now, and I let him in just to hang out.
When you do get a chance, be on your absolute best behaviour, you know. I've had some people
come in the studio because they've had a miserable day at home, they bring it to the studio,
and their nobody. You're at the bottom of the pile yet you're acting like... uhh...
or people have to beg you to do something, you're not going to last, once you walk through
that door, I call it, 'crossing the line', you're on. Be around, be available.
Have a passion. If you're going to do talk radio, if talk radios your thing, have an
opinion. If music radios your thing, have an opinion on the music... you know don't
just sit there, and not interact... even if you're going to be shouted down, say something.
People like people who contribute. Good, bad or indifferent. If someone sitting in the
studio says to me, 'I'm not a big fan of that artist', then I'll say, 'why?' Justify why,
and it makes me feel like some of my listeners, are just like this person.
If you ever get to the point of being on a microphone, in a radio station, less is more.
Don't talk unless you have to, if you haven't got anything to say, DON'T TALK. A radio DJ
is not... it's not just about what you say, it's sometimes about what you don't say.
Work ethic. Which is the same for any single job you ever do. As far as I'm concerned,
in life, the only reason I've got anywhere is because somehow I work a way of getting
enthusiastic, about whatever I'm doing next, and... once I'm there it's 100%. You've got
to work, nothing is god-given, there's too many people trying to do what you want to
do, the moment you slack you're gone, there's a hundred others waiting, so worth ethic is
absolute power amount.
Just by getting in the studio, just by any means necessary, you may get the opportunity
eventually to realize you can do this. You can do a pilot, and then once you've done
a pilot, you're in the lap of the Gods. I'd get as rounded as possible, don't just put
all your eggs into one basket, try and study producing, presenting... the lot. Just absorb
that knowledge because it gives you a better chance.
