before we go to break it that it is time to we've had a lapse because luis has
been
navigating the world of uh... turkish bath houses we haven't had morality
question for lewis for a while but this is one that's it's actually not dat
far-fetched and i recently read the constant gardener
and it's in it's an issue that's in that book and it's also an issue that exist
in reality in the u_s_ in here it is if there was a medication in development
that had the potential it would save ten million people
afflicted with the disease bubble realistically kill ten thousand during
the trial that will be necessary in order to get to that point uh... is
unethical to develop
what would you say would you go forward and say yeah
ten thousand people will die but we're going to save ten million
goes a complicated question is a tactical to develop it yes
as far as the testing does is it that the call
to be giving it to people
what do you know we're going to die
uh... and not tell them
premium white and i thought that i would not know bats sort that out of this
number one when people are
participating in these trials there told
their experimental there may be unpredictable side effects opt to and
including death what sick people are cards are told that
um... that but inevitably still ten thousand people are going to die from
this until you get to the the right formula which will save ten million
people as long as the people in the trial or where they could kill them
yes typing is fine ok it however
this is a good visit www it's known
that you are going to be able tatoo perfect this and save ten million people
so therefore is it still ethical to subject people to die from a disease
if they just waited they wouldn't have to die from presumably
so that the sees that this is carrying might not be
it would be fatal but this is going to be
this is going to be uh... in other words this is going to be done it's going to
be developed in a year
all of the people
still have
several years to live hypothetically ok so if they did wait if they didn't
participate they would eventually be able to reap the benefits of dominican
afforded of this medication
so therefore is it
still ethical the subject people to assad
and faster death
what do you think understand anton
the real question is whether
you would volunteer to be one of her phone it right
yet the house to be our r_b_c_ volunteer basis if you volunteer
but so your elderly you know any volunteer that's fine if that's how they
can achieve uh...
for right uh...
peretz better
focus alot restructure in what way with this not be ethical if it was going to
be if you were telling people that they were being used as guinea pigs or a
fleck and the constant gardener for example
you are specifically choosing low-income or third-world parts of the world as it
has this on that i think we would all agree would be unethical absolutely
okay at what i thought we play the devil's advocate and we say you know
what
we need to test that somewhere
and there's going to be more money made on this if were able to give it to
people in the u_s_ and europe after it's been licensed
that if we are to tested on people in the u_s_ and europe and give it to
people in africa i mean this is hypothetical if we're talking about
tuberculosis for example is the case in constant gardener uh... obviously that's
a complete profit motive situation i would find a completely honest house
moving that way brett however
what if the argument from the from the pharmaceutical companies as white why do
we have to test it
in in the uh... in the poor areas
why do we have to do without
well they don't have to do that
would you ever take part in one of these trials
that's how much money i was uh...
i was going to get him arnelle money no money loaned money you had a condition
and it wasn't looking good for you will by taking part in the trial date maybe
it's going to lead to the development of something that would save others
hard to say
uh... may depend on how sick i was
well there is a
there's lewis take on it lewis is wearing a david patten show t-shirt made
from a hundred percent recycled materials get one at david packing dot
com slash gear will be back we'll talk to floyd brown we'll talk about yet
another incident of right wing tera kya
