After you install Zotero I have some suggestions for setting it up to facilitate
best use
my suggestions are documented on a research guide
located
at
guides
dot emich dot e d u forward slash zotero
the tab labeled Setting Up Zotero
lays out my suggestions as does the third handout on the tab labeled
workshop
handouts
to initiate the setup process open Zotero
and look for a icon that is shaped like a gear
clicking the gear opens the actions menu
select Preferences
all of our setup work will be done on the tabs
that head the preferences window
at this time we will not make any changes to the General tab
to sync your desktop Zotero data
and full text files with the Zotero servers you will want to enter your Zotero
username and password into Zotero
click the Sync tab
and enter your Zotero username and password
at this time I'd suggest you leave everything else on the screen checked
full-text pdf indexing allows text embedded in pdf files to be searched
in Zotero
to enable the pdf indexing you need to install two small programs
click
the Search tab
and then click the button saying 'Check for update'
to install the Zotero word processor plugin
allowing you to use Zotero's data as you write a paper with Microsoft Word or
Libreoffice
click the Site tab
and then click
the link
'Get word processor plugins'
scroll down the page looking for your word processor
and click
install
for Word for Windows I'm asked to allow
Firefox to get it
I'm asked
to install
and then I'm asked to restart Firefox
while Zotero comes with a few citation styling files to format
bibliographies
the citation styles it comes with are generally not the latest versions of the
files
also there over two thousand citation styling files you can choose to add
to Zotero
to update and add to the citation style files that are installed
in Zotero
click the Site tab
and then click the Styles tab
note that the American Psychological Association 6th edition file was last
updated september 27, 2012
look for and click the link saying 'get additional styles'
a new window opens to the Zotero style repository
type
the style you're looking for. I'll type a p a
note that the latest version of of the American Psychological Association
6th edition is january 17, 2013
click the style name
that you want to install in Zotero
and click 'install'
we can close the repository search window
and looking at
the Preferences Styles menu note the date for APA 6th edition
january 17, 2013
with Zotero open
you can highlight titles in the center pane and drag them onto any
word
processor page that is open
this will produce a bibliography in the default style you have pre-selected. To
set the default quick copy bibliographic style
click the Export tab
and below default output format
choose the style
that you want to default to
if you have bibliographic data for an article entered into Zotero
but do not have the full text of the article
you can use Zotero's library lookup feature to send the article's
bibliographic data
to EMU's openURL link resolver, FindText+
to check whether EMU has access to the article you were seeking
if the article is online
you'll be able to open it on your screen
to enable this EMU Findtext search functionality
click the Advanced tab
and toward the bottom
under OpenURL
type the link resolver address that you now see
on the screen
