Hey Guys, for Complex News I'm Natasha Martinez
A major milestone was reached for Compton's most famous rap group last night. N.W.A. was
officially inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn.
To introduce his Compton forefathers, Kendrick Lamar gave an inspiring induction speech to
his role models and thanks to social media, we can see a bit of his tribute to Ice Cube,
Dr. Dre, MC Ren. DJ Yella, and the late Eazy-E.
K. Dot has been very vocal about how the group has inspired his own music and at last nights
ceremony he mentioned looking up to them saying
"I know each and every one of them said they never wanted to be role models, but look:
The first time I saw Eazy bust through that screen out the jail cell on stage on 'We Want
Eazy,' I felt like every single one of them was black superheroes where I come from...People
from our community can be on that television screen, be on awards, and still have their
voice and be real to themselves."
Kendrick went on to say that Eazy is the reason he is proud to say he is from Compton. After
accepting the award Dr. Dre came up to the mic and reiterated his own appreciation for
Eazy and thanking him saying that there is no way that they would be there accepting
the honor without him. He also added that he was certain that Kendrick would one day
be on that same stage.
Also coming up to the mic and adding his two cents to Gene Simmons, was MC Ren. Simmons
said to Rolling Stone that he was looking forward to the death of Hip Hop. MC Ren's
response was one that will put that idea to rest saying
"I want to say to Mr. Gene Simmons that hip-hop is here forever...We're supposed to be here."
You can catch bits of the night off of social media but the full special will be airing
on HBO on April 13th and will include the iconic West Coast group being welcomed into
the 31st class along with Deep Purple, Chicago, Cheap Trick, and more.
