So you've been selected for verification. What exactly does that mean and how can you
complete it as quickly and easily as possible? Verification is where you provide additional
documentation to confirm that your FAFSA information is correct. If you are a dependent student
your parents will also need to help out. You'll need to follow the instructions in
your My Financial Center To Do's. Until your To Do's are completed, we cannot determine
your eligibility for federal student aid. Each student selected for verification must
complete the online verification form, which is easily accessed in My Financial Center.
Federal tax information must also be submitted. The quickest and easiest way to do this is
by returning to FAFSA.GOV and using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. This tool pulls your
data directly from the IRS to your FAFSA; saving you extra time.
If you are not eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool or choose not to, you can always
request a paper Tax Return Transcript from the IRS by following the instructions in your
My Financial Center To Do's. The transcript normally takes five to ten business days to
arrive and then you'll need to submit it to BYU.
Other documents like your W-2s may also be needed. If so, My Financial Center will have all the details.
That's it! Verification in a nutshell.
When you know where to start, it's actually pretty easy. If you have any questions along
the way, send us a message through My Financial Center. We'll reply as soon as we can.
