>> MOM VO: What do I need to know about pregnancy nutrition?
>> EXPERT VO: Eating for two doesn't just mean eating more.
For a healthy baby, it helps to be smart about what you eat.
Here are tips for what to eat each day and why:
Get 5 1/2 to 6 /12 ounces of protein to help support healthy muscle development.
Try to replace solid fats with oils and choose foods with Omega 3 fats.
Eat 6 to 8 ounces of nutritious grains for fuel. Make sure at least half are whole grains.
Get 2 cups of fruits and 2 1/2 to 3 cups of veggies for vitamins, minerals and fiber.
Choose dark leafy greens for folic acid to help support spine and brain development.
Have 3 cups of dairy for protein, calcium and vitamin D.
Take a prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement and ask your doctor about additional calcium
and DHA.
Your doctor can tell you what pregnancy weight gain is appropriate.
Women starting at a healthy weight usually gain 25-35 pounds during pregnancy.
The only question is, how to get started.
So bon apetite.
