Tip:
Highlight text to annotate it

I am just going to show you how to add a post
to a WordPress Site.
It will be very basic. I can’t cover everything,
but it should be enough to get you started.
You have logged in and you will come to your dashboard.
It may look a bit different to mine
but essentially the structure will be the same
Look for this item in the menu, Posts and just go to Add New
That is what we want to do, add a new post.
Here is your post editing screen
And up here you have the Title
And this is the pane or window that you will type your text into for the post itself.
So the first thing we want to do is add a title
And now moving to the actual post itself
Let’s add a sub title
Now, the sub title I am going to change the format of
and make it a Heading Two.
I keep it as a Heading Two because once the post is published
This main title will become the Heading One.
And if you think about it, this sub title has a relationship to that main title.
So that is a Heading One and this is our Heading Two
And now I will add some text
It is in my clip board
When we have some text it might be time
to add another sub heading.
and then usually a bit more text.
And before we go any further
Let’s just make that subheading correctly formatted by making it a Header Two.
So we click on that line, go to this drop-down
and make it a Heading Two.
You should be quite careful about formatting text too much
Because each time you use one of these buttons
It will add code to the page.
I will show you what I mean by that
and this is where you can use the text version of the editor.
This helps you review the underlying code of the page
And one thing to tell you straight away is that I don’t need that
And-n-b-s-p there which is a piece of code that adds a non-breaking space.
But here is some that is important, this h2 and closing h2
They are the HTML tags that make the line into the Heading Two.
Let’s go back the visual editor and you can see
we have our paragraphs of text and a couple of headings.
If you wanted to make some of this text bold
or italic, you just highlight it
and then you click the b for bold or i for italic
There, you can see that. And this is where you do need to be a little cautious
about using these features too much
If I just show you that what that has done is to add these
“strong” tags in to the post.
you can see the more you use it, the more code it adds in and
that can make the page a bit heavier.
Here’s another thing to show you that is quite neat, and that is how to make a list.
Just type in your individual lines of the list.
Initially WordPress will treat them as paragraphs
But if we highlight them,
Taking care to select from the beginning to the end
And then go to this button here. This is an unordered list
and that formats your text using more code
to make them into the list.
If you use that one it adds bullets and
if you use this one, an ordered list, it numbers them for you automatically.
All good stuff.
Now when it comes to publishing the post
the first thing to say is that it is wise to save as a draft in the first place.
You can always go back in and publish it later
and when you have saved your draft post
you can preview.
Now I always right click and open the link in a new tab.
That way, up here, I can swap between the post that I am
editing and review the post here.
So there it is. There’s our list and our paragraphs of text.
and our two headings
And there is the post title and you can see what I mean about relationship.
The main title is Heading One and these are Heading Twos because
they are subheadings of the main title.
Back to the post and this is really important.
Every time you make an edit you must save the draft.
If you leave a page
before saving the draft, you may lose your changes.
We can finish this off here
and add one more sub heading, “The End.”
And save the draft
Now this is why I keep the two tabs open
It is quick to move between the edit screen and preview
Our recent change won’t be seen until we refresh the page.
We need the browser to load the page again to add the detail that we added.
There is our edit added here.
So remember, “Save Draft,” is our friend,
“Preview” the post is our friend.
Whereas “Publish” your post is a friend but
but it comes with strings.
Once you publish, you don’t really want to keep going back to make changes.
You can edit after publishing but you want to
be sure that it is really what you want before you put it live on the site.
So that is it really
I have shown you how to use some of the editing features
I have shown you how to add a paragraph and how to add a sub title.
We have looked at how to use the text editor
although, mostly you will probably use the visual editor.
We have seen how to save your draft and any further edits.
We looked at how to preview the post and a bit later on,
how to publish just by clicking the Publish button.
If you now go back to the left hand column here
and look at the main menu
After we have saved our draft we can go back to All Posts
and you can see a list of posts
including this one that we have just added.
If you want to come back to this in the future and add some more to your draft post.
You find this and click Edit,
and that takes you back to where you were and off you go.
If you add some changes then you
feel confident that it is ready then go ahead and publish
There are other things that you can do here
but this has just been to get you started on adding a post
to your WordPress site. I hope it helps.
