There are many ways to save articles for later use, or share them with other students.
One of the most simple is to use article “permalinks”.
Article Permalinks can be found in most databases,
and offer a permanent and stable web address that can be used to come back to an exact article.
Most databases call these “permalinks”, but they can also be called “Stable URLs” or “Digital Object Identifiers”.
This video will show you where to find these permalinks in some of the most commonly used databases.
Many of the libraries databases are hosted through Ebsco.
The permalink can be found in the same place, no matter which Ebsco database you are using.
Click on the article you want to see, and then click “permalink” on the menu to the right.
A bar will appear above the article with the link inside. Copy and paste the link anywhere you would like to keep it.
The link can be used to get back to this article later, or to direct someone else to this article.
JSTOR is another commonly used database. JSTOR refers to the link as a “Stable URL”.
When you find the article you are looking for, you can find the Stable URL at the top of the page, where it can be copied and pasted.
One tricky database to find permalinks in is ARTSTOR.
When you find the piece of art you were searching for, click on the image’s title. A new window will appear.
Select the “File Properties” tab, and the permalink can be found under “Image URL”.
Saving this link will allow you to come back to this image directly.
Keep in mind that if you send a permalink to someone else they can only see the article
or image if they have access to Southwestern’s databases.
If you are having trouble finding or using permalinks, ask a librarian!
